I liked it (the first video, not the hitler jungen). I guess this is what I was asking in the other thread, where I didn't seem to be able to communicate effectively. Will Obama being the first black president change the mentality (in the positive sense of the word) of the black community, esp. the young? Will high school graduation rates increase, will the young men take responsibility? If it's SUPPOSE to happen (as this video suggests), what if it doesn't, and nothing at all changes in the black community? Hope and "change" are great promises. But if not delivered, there will be consequences, perhaps unanticipated consequences. |

Rainman, I really, really hope so. I'm just not expecting it. Edit: I wrote a response to your second question, then erased it; I'm not ignoring it. I'm going to withhold my opinion here though, at least for a little while. |

I've wondered if in kind of a twisted way, the black community "wins" if Obama loses. If he loses, the anger and bitterness continues, blame can continue. If Obama wins, then the "hope" paradigm changes, or at least it is suggested that it will. And if Obama wins, and nothing changes, the black community loses. I find this very complicated. . .

Are we now here equating Obama with Jesus? |

Jesus could never get elected in America. He hung out with prostitutes, ne'er do wells, and known radical agitators. Karl Rove would be all over him like a bad suit. |

The one major difference between a cult of personality and a religion is that the object of the former is living among us. |

My sense no one is going to solve the huge problems facing black boys and men in the black community over night. However, Obama has as much gravitas as anyone to effectuate sorely needed change. He inspires - whether you find this clip creepy or not - you have to admit that he seems to have a planted a seed of inspiration in that small group of boys. I dare say, they are not the only ones feeling inspired and hope; hope can be infectious. One of the reasons I am so excited about an Obama presidency is because I think he will have a tremendous positive impact on this huge, disenfranchised group. I worry less about what if things don't change positively if Obama is elected than I worry about what will become of the dashed hopes of millions of blacks if he loses. |

Well, do you think they're optimistic about Obama because he could bring the change they so desperately want, or do you think they're optimistic because they feel that Obama empowers them in some way to create the change themselves? It's great if they're taking an interest in politics, but seriously, just how much change can Obama bring to the table? My life hasn't changed much at all in the transition from Clinton to Bush. I doubt theirs will either unless they enable themselves.
If you're putting all your hope of a better life into someone not yourself, then you've made a serious miscalculation. |
