As explained in the below article, when you go negative you lose favorability points at the same time you take them away from your target. He suggests the gap is too wide for McCain's new strategy to work.

I don't think going (more) negative will make any difference. Doesn't everyone by now hit the mute button whenever political ad comes on?

To quote from the S&G song, "a man hears what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest."

That pretty much sums up people's positions anyway.
