I'll be registering as an Independent next summer when I turn 18

I don't get it. One should "register" in order to vote ? "Register" where ? By registering as "independent", "republican" or "democrat" one makes public his political views ?

Erm, I'm no expert as I obviously haven't done this yet, but my understanding is that one registers with the state government, probably online, and it's used for statistical purposes as well as election primaries.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
In most states people register with a party to vote in the primaries. Only party affiliated registered voters vote for party candidates (and people have to declare which party) to keep the other party from stacking the election against them by promoting weaker candidates.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

o.k. So if it's for primaries, what's the point of registerings as "independent" ?

Because some people don't want to be associated with either of the two major parties?

Why ? Who cares ? If I don't want to vote in the primaries why should I "register" at all ? Can one vote in the "general elections" without being registered ?

Yes, though people are (I think) default registered "independent" if no party affiliation is designated.

Only party affiliated registered voters vote for party candidates ... to keep the other party from stacking the election against them by promoting weaker candidates.

Do you really think that could happen????

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
