You guys should be nicer to Kathy.

Why?

Because you purport to be a Christian, and i don't believe your or anyone else's "version" of Jesus would tolerate the kind of venom that you and Larry spew.

That's why.

jf

Christians vary.

Each one gets to do whatever he/she wants.
It's cool!

And that theology is a big part of what's wrong with the church today. I realize it was probably a partly sarcastic statement to begin with, but there are too many Christians who aren't too far from agreeing with it. :(

The idea that Christians are somehow better behaved than the rest of us is a crock of you-know-what, at least based on my observations.

Your mileage may, of course, vary, but I really don't care, because it's my mileage I'm worried about, and of course I'm not a Christian.

That clip was strange.  I saw the same clip on the evening news, and he didn't sound exactly like that.  That clips sounds modified.

Thank you, MS.

BTW, I appreciate your posts. Often you bring a needed voice of reason to these discussions.

You think This clip was altered? I dunno. It's from Huffpost (the first clip on the page; not the second one). You might not agree with their editorial comments, but they're pretty straight shooting with their facts. It's just a 13 second clip; there may be tiny bit of reverb, but I think it's a straight up recording.

And, yup, your LOL cats rock.

It does sound a bit different from the clip I heard on the news. Perhaps the crowd is more blended out in this version. His voice sounds much louder -- and therefore the effect stronger -- in this version. I remember thinking it was a funny kind of verbal reaction in the news clip, but this sounds highlighted from what I heard.

Well, Kathy, why don't you try having a civil conversation that is not mocking a person with disabilities before deciding that we can't discuss something I disagree with.

It pretty much works for everyone else here.

As I explained, I had no idea that his "disabilities" were being mocked, if in fact, as you say, they even were. What struck me was the ridiculous laugh. For you to take the leap and accuse me of mocking people with disabilities (unless you consider laughing like a dirty old man a disability) is disgustingly disingenuous, but par for the course in the way you argue on this board.

Back up a second here, Kathy. I first pointed out that the clip showed him as a disabled person (who was disabled because he was tortured) being exuberant. That should have been a massive clue for anyone with a shred of civility or intelligence.

You then decided that it was ok to laugh at him anyway, and I was being humorless.

I disagreed that it was acceptable to laugh at people who are disabled. Anyone with a shred of intelligence or civility or compassion should have stepped back at that point, whereas you kept pushing forward, accusing me of playing the POW card.

I then had to make the point more forcefully, and you expected us to believe that you missed the obvious parallel to a penguin due to his AWKWARD movements.

But in the end, regardless of why, we now see that regardless of causes, mocking other people's mannerisms is ok in your book, huh? Got it.

Nothing disingenuous about what I wrote (which btw, is not the right word). You mock people whose mannerisms you find ridiculous. It doesn't matter whether they were beaten, or had their legs broken, or they suffered from cancer: you mock people whose mannerisms you find ridiculous.

What am I missing here?

When I first saw the clip, I didn't notice any sort of cackling -- just McCain's regular mannerisms. Which are fully explained by his physical traumas. Which is why the notion that this would be his Dean Scream is obviously cheap leftist hatemongering.

The "cackles" were added to the audio after the fact.

Here's a very brief clip of that same town hall, during which McCain laughs.

You can tell his voice is distinct from the other audio clip. I think that other one was modified.

Interesting. How people walk. Penguin.

Next time you see Obama walk, take note, it's impressive. It's a kind of, "I'm so cool, I AM HERE, look how cool I am."

It's kind of a cool-guy strut, popular in the 70's I think. Regardless, I would doubt he walks that way at home.

Or maybe it just looks to me like a guy that LOVES the spotlight and attention, and can't get enough of it.

So cool, so hip, so above everyone. . .so elite.

The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. What does it matter how he laughs, anyway? Is anyone here that shallow that they'll decide their Presidential vote on whether the guy laughs one way or another?

Time for a small theology lesson....

I'm sure at the root of your argument is the "7x7" statement made by Jesus. I don't think Jesus was actually referring to 49 different malicious events, but rather telling his flock to be long-suffering and patient with those who would provoke them.

Or, as an old Baptist deacon once told me, "I will go out of my way not to have harsh words with anybody. I will gladly suffer the first blow of physical violence. I may even let a man have the second lick."

" But then I'm going to stomp a mudhole out of him ".

Whether or not that's a good statement of Christian theology, why don't you go back and ask that deacon whether it would be OK to stomp a mudhole in the guy three months later, six months later, a year later, two years later, and every time you see him thereafter, even though he'd done nothing new to provoke you.

Because, even accepting your strained and fairly ridiculous views of Kathy's behavior, that's what you're doing.

It's a little known fact that in the lost book of Barnabas Jesus refers to the Romans as a 'bunch of brain dead assholes' and threatens to give Judas a 'kicking he won't forget'. Judas then walks up to him in front of a number of Roman soldiers and gave him what is commonly referred to as a 'Scotch kiss'. As is well known, things began to go rapidly downhill after this unfortunate event.

Gawd damn atheist. At least you can try to get your Bible quotes accurate. In the Book of Barnabas, Jesus did not say that. He referred to the Romans as a 'bunch of brain dead bobbleheads'.

Please try to get it right in the future, OK?

The aramaic word for 'bobble' is 'sheentah', which is very similar to the word 'shientah' meaning donkey, or ass. I think this may have led to some confusion in the early translations, particularly since Barnabas' handwriting got a little shaky at the point where all the Romans started chasing them around in a circle like in that bit out of Life of Brian which is vaguely reminiscent of the Holy Book of Benny Hill Hinn.

How can a word be aromatic?

In biblical times they didn't have any decent soap, so pretty much everything was aromatic. The original title for The Bible was actually Life Stinks, but it didn't attract much interest since it was felt that pointing out something so bloody obvious was unlikely to attract a very large following.
