Hi everyone, for anyone that is interested, here's a quick summary of my triathlon yesterday. As you may know (link to previous thread) the Reston Triathlon (1mi swim, 22.3 bike, 6.2 mi run) on September 7 was cut to a duathlon because of the hurricane that came through and left debris in the water. That duathlon went great, but I have been swimming a lot and wanted to sign up for another one so I could have an official triathlon under my belt! So I signed up for the Naylor's Beach Triathlon (almost a mile swim, 25 miles bike, 6.2 miles run), which is in eastern Virginia, about 2 hours southeast of DC. Long story as short as possible, I got up at 4:30am and drove down there. It was raining off and on the whole time, including during the start of the race. It was well organized and there were lots of professional racers there it seemed, including a bunch of collegiate teams. The race started at 9am with a 1.5k (almost a mile) swim in the Rappahannock River. Lots of bodies in the beginning and while no kicking in the face, the first 5-10 minutes were very crowded and hard to get a rhythm. Lots of hitting others with your arms and them hitting your legs, etc. Oh well...part of the fun, right? I got into the rhythm finally and finished in 29:16. It was a fun swim and the water felt great (70 degrees). Then out of the water and the transition to the bike. I took my time here (since I'm not really racing for the top spot) and had a slow transition as I dried off and got ready for the ride. The biking session felt great, but for every downhill there was an uphill. There were a couple hills there that were KILLER. I'm talking about how everyone was on their easiest gear and doing the standing-while-pedaling effort and still barely moving along. I could have walked faster! Felt like we were climbing the alps....easily the hardest hills I've ever done on my bike...but again, all part of the fun, right? Then the transition to the running (6.2 miles)...for the first mile my legs felt extra heavy (expected after biking 25 miles) but did an opening split of 7:49. After that I did low-8's and finished in 50:18. A little slower than I expected but I also swam a mile and rode 25 miles before hand. So I finished in 2:50...happy I broke 3 hours which was really the only goal I had. It was a fun time, although I was a bit annoyed they didn't give out finisher medals! PS. I met an old guy there who had his bike next to mine in the transition area...he is 75 years old and has completed 17 triathlons....THIS YEAR ALONE! |

My triathlon consisted of launching myself from bed, hauling ass to work, and then sprinting for the coffee pot.... I completed it in less than an hour. Go, me!!! I think I'll go home and have some celebratory beers.

Aqua, see I'm the cool mom that every kid wants. I'm tough on the important issues and a creampuff on the little stuff. Hey, if you want a cupcake once in a while, you'll know this mom is here for you! Oh, that's right, you already know about the chocolate chip cookies, too. |
