Number of atheists as percentage of the U.S. population, according to Gallup in 2004 and again in 2005. Why do we seem to have a higher percentage on this board? |

I'm no atheist, but let's back up a minute. Do you think this board is an accurate cross section of America? I don't. I do not think there is a single African American or Hispanic among us. Using the posts on this board as a way to understand america is a flawed premise. But I love this place! |

I'm Hispanic although I've spent 97% of my life in the USA. My question is, why does it seem like 2/3 threads in this room are political in nature when there is a seperate room dedicated for politics? |

Most likely explanations: 1. TNCR members are, on average, more intelligent than the US general population. 2. TNCR members are, on average, higher educated than the US general population. |

What Ax is saying is that the more intelligent and the more educated you are, the less likely you are to believe in God - showing that he is not as intelligent or as educated as he thinks. |

Yes, I am aware of what Ax is saying. I'm just wondering how he knows, or whether he was just trying to pay all of us a compliment.

All too predictable while those two statements may be true, IMO they have nothing to do with the proportion of the population that's atheist. Given the small sample size of TNCR, it's likely within a reasonable confidence interval anyways. If I could get a survey of all members, it would be a piece of cake to run a hypothesis test. <3 TI-89 + AP Statistics.

The stratification by country is interesting but raises far too many statistical problems to discuss at 1:30am. Suffice it to say that it offers little, if any, evidence to support your assertion. The page itself asks,
That question is at the heart of the issue. Note that the author of the page says that the data provided do not answer the question, but instead only lead the reader to wonder about it. It's also interesting to note that the US (Where most of TNCR resides) is somewhat of an outlier on the graph at the top of the page. This makes your case even more tenuous. There's also the issue that this is based on one poll each for religiosity and IQ. In short, the data are little more than useless. Nice try. I need sleep. Goodnight everyone! |

It seems the people that go to church are of two age groups: (1) People with young children; and (2) elderly people. The ages 45-55ish years, people without young children, seem to be lacking in churches. |

What I find interesting is how some Americans like to divy up groups into white, black, non black, hispanic, atheist, jewish, baptist, etc.. It almost seems like these people need to know the demographics before they enter a conversation. I just don't think we're like that up here. Few care of these things. |
