Those articles sell magazines. They're over-simplified [/bias]. Did you see this article? More importantly, what's up with the new avatar? Please explain. Not seeing the dough boy / father threw me this morning. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Well duh. Ever BEEN to Cleveland? The inner city I have seen has very little charm or potential for rehabbing. |

Interesting and, I believe, relatively factual article. While Pittsburgh was mentioned in the article for population loss, it wasn't one of the 10 dying cities cited. The root cause is loss of manufacturing jobs in every case, I believe. Just the names correlate with major industries. I can very well relate to the story because I worked for decades in a company that serviced manufacturing and I watched plant after plant die along with, eventually, my own employer. The popluation loss in Pittsburgh is first from the core city to the surrounding metropolitan area where the total population has changed very little and second to the Sunbelt. The great Steeler fan diaspora occurred with the mass closures of steel mills and related facilities in the 1980s. Since then it has slowed, but we have never turned into a growth area. The reasons for that defy simple analysis. I'm an unabashed booster for this region. I wish I could find a simple key to restoring growth here and throughout the rust belt. Big Al |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |
