Just triple the 5% GST in full service restaurants only on the before tax portion of the bill. In otherwords don't tip the tax. |

Electricity is known as 'hi-dro'. I'm not sure why, maybe 'dro' is French for 'voltage'. The French word for 'mph' is 'km/h'. The police routinely drive behind American visitors with their lights flashing and sirens blaring as a mark of respect. |

I spend a lot of time in the US, and as far as I can tell, tipping isn't any different. 15% is pretty standard, and yes, that's before tax. Be prepared for the 14% tax on just about everything. Grocery items and books only have a 6% tax (GST). If in doubt, add an extra "U" to your. ![]() Edit: Just FYI - London gets AMAZING thunderstorms. Lots of 'em. They also get a ridiculous amount of snow compared to the rest of this area. I don't think I've ever driven through London between November and April when it wasn't snowing. |

d'Oh is right - it's hydro if you're from the centre of the universe, AC. ![]() (and kenny, just in case you actually want to know it's because a lot of our hydro is generated through hydro electric power from Niagara Falls. I'm sure John knew that as well, but thought you might have wanted the actual answer )

Since January 1 GST has been 5%. In Alberta there is only the 5% federal GST, there are no provincial sales or excise taxes. |

It's very likely, but Kenny needn't worry. Canadian elections take about as long as one of Mr. Obama's speeches. |

IT's down to 5%? Damn. I had no idea. I still work on the 15% assumption (8% PST here). Thanks, AC! |

Out here we wouldn't call Toronto or Ontario the centre of the universe. We call it something but it's slightly more south of central... if you catch my drift.

*snicker Yeah, but I couldn't call myself an Ontarian (and former Torontonian) if I didn't bring it up now and then! On a sidenote - my mother rants and raves about the weather channel because they don't even SHOW our area on the map. If it's south of London, it apparently doesn't exist. |

The Toronto weather radio forecaster used to describe where we lived (and pretty much everywhere else within a 100 mile radius) as 'cottage country'. No additional description was needed, apparently, for the hardy souls driving their enormous SUV's up the 401. |

A great sport here on the west coast is comparing our weather to what's happening in the Toronto area. We become very quiet when our weather sucks and theirs doesn't though. Almost meek.btw, it's 'hydro' here too. We pay GST on our books for the library. Then at the end of the year, I get to make and submit pretty reports for the full amount and we get a refund cheque.

The funny thing about Toronto is that the jokes about it start pretty much at the city limits. We were only 90 miles away and the locals talked about the place with real 'feeling', if you catch my drift. |

oh he's definitely right. If you're in the core 905 area, then Toronto is THE place. Period. End of sentence. 10 minutes outside of that, and the mere mention of the word is cause for eye rolling and snickering. |
