HOLY CARP!!!

Obviously a lot more to be worked out, but this is hopeful news.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Now let the carping and criticism of Bush begin. Even though the basis of this deal is the growing strength of the Iraqi parliament, which is exactly what we were there for all this time.

Come on, Mik, you're smarter than that.

He's getting pressure from two sides.

First, from the American public, which wants the war OVER. Poll after poll shows that. Without a plan in place, he's afraid the Republicans will get slaughtered in November.

And, on the other side, we have the Iraqi government, which has made it clear that it wants us out.

Rock >>>> Bush <<<< Hard Place

Normally, El Presidente wouldn't care about such things. He's immune to the views of the American public, and especially to those of the second class citizens that occupy the non-U.S. parts of the planet. But, in January 2009, he loses control. What happens will no longer be up to him. He needs to seize the opportunity to declare victory while he can. This is is legacy we're talking about, after all.

The basis of this deal isn't the strength of the Iraqi parliament. The basis is that the decibels of El Presidente's quacking are growing louder by the minute. Lame-duckitude is no fun.

I think maybe you're reading a bit too much into Bush's motivations. I've seen little evidence that he is concerned about his legacy. More like he is convinced that he is doing the right thing and that the legacy will take care of itself.

Anyway, I ripped thru the article and may have missed it, but if there are no U.S. bases after 2013 and no U.S. troops stationed there permanently, that may actually be the must stunning evidence that one of the main long-range goals of the entire operation is a failure.

Of course, an alternate view to all this is that we are winning.

The problem is, he's said we were winning so many times over the last several years, he's the President Who Cried Wolf. It might be the truth, but it's hard to separate it from his usual pack o' lies.

Yep. Never mind that we've met 15 of 18 criteria for success.

Sure, there is possibly a political component to this. But the GOP is not the party that has been playing divisive politics with Iraq for 5 years while our troops were on the ground.

If I did that I would never have gotten through school. Wouldn't have learned enough to even sit in the more advanced courses.

Same people who judged less than half of goals were met last year. Last year there was a huge chorus of "See! We've failed! Time to go home!"

This year, you don't believe them.
