I think the Beijing Olympics may not be generating the publicity the Chinese expected. Bush is Meddling: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/07/bus...pics/index.html And I just got this email from my Congressman. From: Congressman Frank R. Wolf <Frank.Wolf@houseenews.net> Subject: Improving the Safety of Imported Chinese Goods Dear Friends, Knowing of your support for increasing the safety of imported goods from China and other countries, I wanted you to know that the House with my support overwhelmingly passed the conference agreement on the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (H.R. 4040) on July 30. This important legislation has now been sent to the president for his signature. The legislation reauthorizes and strengthens the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which was created in 1972 through the Consumer Product Safety Act to protect against unreasonable risks of injuries associated with consumer products. The CPSC has the authority to regulate the sale and manufacture of more than 15,000 different consumer products, including children’s products and toys. Recently, there have been several recalls of children’s products for high levels of lead content. Over the past several years there have been a number of warnings regarding the materials used in toys and other goods manufactured in China. This important legislation should improve the CPSC’s ability to quickly identify dangerous goods and notify consumers. I support free trade and open markets, but we must also ensure that we have strong safeguards in place to guarantee that imported goods meet U.S. safety and quality standards. The safety of consumers, and especially our children, is paramount. Best wishes. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |
