The strangest thing happened yesterday.; Now I am officially an airhead

HOLY CARP!!!
I'm not going to post a pic of my face - it's too embarrassing.

Yesterday I had a 10:00 dental appointment to replace an old filling.
Everything went normally and I left about 11:00.
About 12:00 the Novacaine was wearing off and it kind of tingled and itched a bit as the feeling returned to the cheek and gums.

I was feeling my jaw with my fingers and my tongue.
The skin of my cheek felt kind of tight so I tried stretching it by inflating my cheeks, as you would to blow up a balloon or play trumpet.
Apparently because of the Novacaine I did not have the usual biofeedback of how much pressure I was building up.

Within 60 seconds the right side of my face swelled up - A LOT!
My cheek was puffed out like a chipmunk carrying acorns and the tissue under my right eye started to swell they eye shut.

I drove back to my dentist but nobody was at the front desk and I could smell food.
I had to bang loudly on their door.
The hygienist let me in and said, "OMG what happened to you?"
"I don't know, it just swelled up", I replied.

The doctor came over and kind of freaked out.
He immediately gave me some antibiotics and and ice pack.
He said if he had popped the vein during the injection it would have swelled up immediately, not 90 minutes later.

He called a local ENT, ear nose and throat doctor, and got me squeezed in.
The ENT sent me next door to the hospital for a CT scan of my head.

I just spoke to him about the results.
Fortunately, the CT scan showed the walls of my sinus cavities were not breached and there was no foreign matter, like silver amalgam from the filling, blown up into the tissues of my face.

Turns out I blew air into the tissues of my head via a tiny laceration in my gums from the dental procedure or the tiny hole from the needle.

There is still air there now.
I can hear it crackling if I press on my face.
Very strange.

So I have to finish the course of antibiotics.
Since it is air and not blood I should not get black and blue.
It may take a week or so to get back my devastatingly handsome looks.

The ENT doc says a similar injury happens to trumpet players, except the high pressure actually ruptures the walls of their sinus cavities.
He and my dentist say this is exceedingly rare after a dental procedure. (As in they've never heard of it.)

Moral of the story is don't blow up balloons, play trumpet or inflate your cheeks after a dental appointment.

Well, duh, you're an airhead! You're a liberal, afterall. :D

Seriously, glad you're ok. My allergic reaction was to the anti-biotics so you're lucky in that sense. Of course, the right side of my jaw has been hurting the past few days, hopefully due to my allergies. I REALLY hope it's just my sinuses after reading this. :hide:

Crepitus

Crepitus is a medical term to describe the grating, crackling or popping sounds and sensations experienced under the skin and joints. The sound can be created when two rough surfaces in the human body come into contact - for example, in osteoarthritis when the cartilage around joints has eroded away and the joint ends grind against one another, or when the fracture surfaces of two broken bones rub together. In soft tissues, crepitus can be produced when gas is introduced into an area where it normally isn't present. The term can also be used when describing the sounds produced by lung conditions such as interstitial lung disease—these are also referred to as "rales". Crepitus is often loud enough to be heard by the human ear, although a stethoscope may be needed to detect instances caused by respiratory diseases. In times of poor surgical practice, post-surgical complications involved anaerobic infection by Clostridium perfringens strains, which can cause gas gangrene in tissues, also giving rise to crepitus. Subcutaneous crepitus is a crackling sound resulting from subcutaneous emphysema, or air trapped in the subcutaneous tissues.

TTIWWP???

What now?
Is the air there forever?
If not how long till it goes away?
How does it get out?
Any precautions while the air is there?

Please don't send me a bill. :lol2:

No. It'll go away on its own.

It'll diffuse into the blood (slowly) and be carried away.

Safest thing to do is to sell a concert grand piano for about $12,000. That's what I tell everyone I see with subcutaneous emphysema. It'll cause the money air to be sucked out of you. Otherwise, I'd probably stay out of airplanes for as long as it lasts (probably only a day or two).

You will have to point out to me the exact difference between this photo and others you have posted.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Crepitus

My father had pulmonary fibrosis, was on oxygen, and developed crepitus. He thought it was fascinating that his skin would crackle.

Heh. Kenny gives himself a blow job.

I had a good ROTFLMAO when I read this. I see George covered it. Do you know how many kids bite their cheeks everyday & this happens to? Lots.

And hey .. only in America eh! Here in Canada there's no way person could so quickly see an ENT, their own family doctor even, never mind get a CT for it. Gah. You folks are indeed lucky!

We used to call it "crispy" crepitus (As in snap-crackle-pop - Rice Crispies).

Glad you're okay Kenny :)

Subcutaneous embolism would be more accurate, I think. Crepitus is the descriptor of the sound, and most commonly pertains to the joints; knees in particular.

The "Rice-Krispies" thing is also seen in divers who get non-clinical cases of The Bends. (i.e. not requiring a doctor's visit, or a ride in the deco chamber) Usually, it manifests in the chest area, and feels like tiny packing bubbles under the skin.
