Barges are cool, but yeah, they can be dangerous. Dad almost drowned one Christmas Eve when I was a kid, while trying to keep one filled with coal from sinking.

My uncle worked on a tugboat for 'bout 20 years, and moved a ton of barges around. He worked mostly in Louisiana, Bermuda, and Baltimore. I should ask him to let me scan in some pictures when I see him next, he's got some great ones. |

My Grandpa told me the story of the time he was out fishing w/a friend in the Columbia. A barge came along and they went to get out of the channel. They couldn't get their motor started. The barge passed by so close that it sucked their boat alongside and the two of them were standing in the boat and pushing to keep the boat away from the side of the barge. I'm not sure how long they had to do this but he said it felt like forever and those barges can be quite long. When I was a teen our house, like most in The Dalles, had a view of the river. One day my brother and I happened to notice something odd on a barge headed upriver. Another brother had a telescope set up to view the river and we looked thru it and saw the barge had about four large houses sitting on it. We drove down to the dam and were able to watch it go thru the locks. Someone said they were homes from the Corps of Engineers site at Bonneville Dam and were being moved due to the construction of something. Not sure where they took them. |

I generally thought of barge trips as a European vacation event. I was surprised to learn not long ago that there is at least one company operating passenger barges (not steamships like the Delta Queen, which I had known about) on US waterways. Link here: RiverBarge Excursions. At one time, and perhaps today, the single largest point of concentration of freight traffic was at Port Perry, PA near the Edgar Thomson Works of US Steel. With multiple railroad lines paralleling both sides of the Monongahela River, two railroad bridges crossing there, and very heavy barge traffic on the river itself, freight was always moving. Here's a couple of photos from there... ![]() ![]() Big Al |

I worked for a number of years for Dravo Corporation in their Engineering & Construction Division. They also had a Marine Division that built barges and towboats for the inland waterways. During WW II, they cranked out ocean-going vessels. A summary of that story is here: Dravo Corporation historical marker![]() A LST ready for launch on Memorial Day, 1944 Big Al |
