Well, I'm not up to getting out on the freeway. I've got two-lane highways between my home and work, so that's pretty nice... Semi-trucks scare me to death, but with the weight of this bike, I don't think they'll be as much of an issue as I think. We'll see...

Semi's aren't as bad as people in cars. Oh, and if you ever draft a semi, stay less than a bikes length from his rear end and you don't even have to feed gas.

My position is simple: you jumped to an unwarranted conclusion and slung mud on an issue where none was deserved. Quirt 03/08/09

No kidding.

And that is one reason I don't ride bikes anymore.

Believe me: I am being very cautious with all of this. Just like with scuba: It's fun as hell, but it's good to always bear in mind that you're doing something that can get your ass killed in a hurry.

Frank,

Once you get comfortable you have to try out other bikes. If you ever ride a BMW you will be probably be trading.

Heh.. Maybe.... I really love the way this bike looks, though. Really classic lines, and the Vance & Hines pipes really make it rumble!! But yeah... I definitely want to try out some other bikes.

LB's right.

I can ride it seemingly forever and not get tired, and it does *everything* I could possibly expect a motorcycle to do.

When I was single, I'd joke that if it had tits.....

:sombrero:

If you're ever curious, I can tell you about all of the things that make BMW's special. The cars are one thing, but the motorcycles are more in a class of their own than any other bike. To date, I've owned:

1972 R60/5(my first real motorcycle)
1983 R100CS(I logged just over 100,000 miles on that one)
1978 R80/7
1973 R75/5(the smoothest twin BMW ever built)
1996 R1100RS(the fastest Beemer I've ever owned)
2003 R1150RS(current ride)

I'm a two-jug man at heart.....

OT, I've been curious and you probably know this. Whatever happened to the BMW K-series bikes? Aesthetically, I've never liked the opposed twin, so I really thought the K-series looked great. Didn't seem like they made them for very long.

Sweet!! In the short rides that I took this morning and yesterday evening, the bike felt comfortable... Shifting was very smooth, and it was a joy to ride. I was all worried that I'd bought too much bike for my abilities, had buyer's remorse, thought about trading it back for a smaller bike, etc.

Pffffft...... I'm glad I got this bike, and I don't think it's one that I will outgrow. It's a heavy bike though, and it's sloppy and ungainly at slower speeds. Chances are though, it's the operator, rather than the bike.

I'm staying way the hell away from the big trucks, if I can. I doubt I will be doing anything like that, any time in the forseeable future.

Oh no, they still make 'em.

that's the right attitude, Grasshopper. :thumb: You can *always* find room for improvement in your riding.

Dang, I just remembered: It'd be sweet if Phykell dropped in for this conversation. He's another avid motorcyclist.

Heh... I just always assume it's ME and not the bike. LOL Ah well... The skills will come. The only way to get it is to DO IT. (and yeah: Where's Phykell been?)

OT, I recently went to the BMW website and somehow didn't realize that any of the bikes were the K-series! I thought they were all opposed twins. Another reason to like this place - you can go right to the source!

Yeah, at the site, all of the front-page images are twins, but when you click on the type, they show the K's in the new window.

The twins are their heritage, so I guess it makes sense that they promote them a little more.

In 1974 a few of us rode from Louisville Ky, to Denver Co, I had a Honda 750 and when we got to Denver I was beat. On the return trip I rode a friends BMW (700 or 750 iirc) part of the way. It was like sitting in a recliner relaxing. In 1975 I bought an R900. Fantastic bike.

BMW has always had style down pat. Nice looking bike - look at that low-slung seat.

That would have been an R75/6 - 750cc. Until the advent of the new generation twins, you could always tell the displacement of a BMW by adding a zero to the model designation: R50 - 500cc, K100 - 1,000cc, R75 - 750cc, etc. Now, the model incorporates the displacement.

I saw one that looked very similar to that one, it was at keyboard Carriage last year. Keyboard was delivering it to a guy that had it completely restored at the BMW factory.

NICE!!!

A lot of people told me that I shouldn't buy a really nice bike for my first one, because everyone drops their bike in the first year. Well, I got that out of the way, yesterday.

I rode home from work with no problem, pulled into the driveway, and then hooked around so I could pull into the garage. Next thing I knew, I was on the ground. WTF? The only thing hurt was my pride. (and a tiny scrape on my elbow).

I cut the engine. Swore a little, and then squatted down in front of the low side of the bike, so that the bike was behind me, grabbed the hand-grip on that side and the edge of the seat, and then lifted the bruiser upright. Hrmph... The crashbar/highway peg and saddlebag took the whole impact, so there was no damage and not a single scratch.

 :rolleyes2:
