It's the law: No sagging pants in Chicago suburb
Jul 20, 8:19 AM (ET)

LYNWOOD, Ill. (AP) - Be careful if you have saggy pants in the south Chicago suburb of Lynwood. Village leaders have passed an ordinance that would levy $25 fines against anyone showing three inches or more of their underwear in public.

Eugene Williams is the mayor of Lynwood. He says young men walk around town half-dressed, keeping major retailers and economic development away. He calls the new law a hot topic.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the ordinance targets young men of color.

Young adults in the village, like 21-year-old Joe Klomes, say the new law infringes on their personal style. He says leaders should instead spend money on making the area look nicer.

Well, Lynwood is about 1200 feet from Indiana. I guess that explains it. :silly:

I'm surprised that a major retailer specializing in the sale of saggy pants, stupid belts, and overpriced boxer shorts hasn't moved in.

Such an event would be a Hot Topic for sure.

Yeah, Indiana pressured them. We tried to get them to include the wearing of hats properly and a stupid twit clause.

It is a very, very annoying fashion, but legislating against it seems very heavy-handed.

I don't think it's really targeting men of color (sic) per se, however it does target people who don't mind looking really f*cking stupid, and civil liberties groups have traditionally supported these types of individuals, for whatever reason.

The Soviets used to have a charge of hooliganism. Maybe the Russians do to. Hard to define, but I know it when I see it.

Basically fashion laws should be written to ensure everyone conforms to what you consider acceptable clothing standards?

It is sure nice to see everyone agreeing with me on this. I do think that baseball catchers and welders should be excluded from the hat ruling.

I agree it's a pretty unpleasant fashion, but to start calling in the fashion police strikes me as pretty over-the-top. It'll go away, just like countless other bad fashion episodes. Where were the fashion police when we women were sporting huge shoulder pads, and perming our hair and making it stick up as high as possible? That was rather unpleasant to look at, in hindsight. We got over that, I'm sure guys will stop wanting to flash their undies one day as well.

I agree with the law. It's not a matter of fashion as much as it is having to look at peoples asses hanging out of their pants.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D
