I just got my Tool List from the school; Stuff I must buy

HOLY CARP!!!
$802 of specialized piano tech tools.
Reportedly this is 10% below wholesale because 14 students are all buying the exact same thing.

$300 German Tuning hammer, includes 3 heads - this reportedly is also at a substantial quantity discount
$167 Tool Case, actually that was my splurge at last month's Piano Technician Guild Conference
About $100 of stuff from Home Depot.

All the techs I talk to say the tool buying never stops.

I've been trying to give it up the last couple of days. I was doing fine until this morning when I had a killer headache. So I had about 1.5 cups and tried to sleep it off.

Kenny, do you have a Schaff account yet?

If not, you should call and set up an account. Years ago, they required a referral if you're not an RPT. If so, I'll be happy to refer you.

Kenny, you don't need a 300$ tuning hammer. All you need is a 40$ student tuning hammer. I have about a dozen different tuning hammers, some costing lots of money. The one I preferred to use was my 40$ Schaff student model.

Why would German hammers be any better than British hammers, or even American ones? Do the Germans know something about hammering that eludes the rest of the world? At the very least they clearly know something about ripping off foreigners.

Piano-anything + German-anything (factory, 'designer', sounding name, etc) = /-\\/\/3$0/\/\3!11

I probably have something similar to what Larry uses. Since most of my work is in restorations, I just haven't gotten the bug to replace to old gray-handled thing my father gave me.

If I were tuning all day though, I'd probably indulge myself. (just remember to get a complete spare set--stuff happens when you're out on the road...)

Lar, I respect your opinion but as a student I'll get the materials the school requires.

If you ran the school and set up the tool list I'd buy what you told me to buy.
If others disagreed with your list I'd ignore them.

Thanks Rainman.
I may take you up on that later.

Hey, it's your money.

But a tech school instructor telling people they have to buy a 300$ tuning wrench in order to learn how to tune needs to seriously question his qualifications to teach.

Unless he's working on commission for the tool distributor.......

Do you realize what the carbon footprint on those German tuning hammers is? You just lost all of your credits for the years of hypermiling.

If they dank regular soda with their twinkies it would be more calories.

If they dank regular soda with their twinkies it would be more calories.

The analogy is pretty direct -- they remain fatties.

There are various ways to look at a fat person selecting a diet soda to have with their twinkie

1. Good idea to reduce caloric intake by selecting diet soda, especially since it is a fat person, and especially since they are eating a twinkie.

2. They are fat and eating a twinkie, that cancels out ANYTHING they drink so they might as well drink a regular drink.

I believe #1 is logical and true.
I believe #2 is dumb but is the perspective of many people.
