10,000 hours is all it takes.

Funny, I've used that very number before when talking about learning piano. I told a friend that I estimate learning a language well is a 2,500 hour commitment, whereas learning piano well is a 10,000 hour commitment.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

There's actually some science behind that.

I read it in This is Your Brain on Music

The author speculated that even Mozart came relatively close to that number at a young age.

My sense is that there is some truth to the rule that a high number of hours (obviously quality practice time) correlates to ability, more than any other factor.

Sam, when I read your description of your lessons only being 20-40 minutes when you expected at least 60 minutes, I thought you were definitely being shortchanged. There's no reason for a teacher to take the excuse that you weren't ready to receive instruction unless everything was technically learned and secure. That's ridiculous! There's plenty to discuss, especially when first starting a new work. Your teacher should have devoted the time and energy to give you a full hour of instruction.
