Four places I have been:
4. Edinburgh, Scotland

When, for how long, etc. Another place I'd love to visit; I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I was in Edinburgh for the festival and for business a few years back during the famous European heat wave in August that killed a lot of unattended elderly people who could have been saved if anyone had just cared enough to put their feet in cool water. It was steamy and 85 degrees F (at least 30 C) with comparable humidity. Hardly anyone had any air conditioning although everyone seemed to find and use fans. There were many good opportunities to sample some very good ales and porters, oh my, not to mention whiskeys. They all really appreciated my liking for their national drinks.

Edinburgh is a handsome old gray stone and slate city with some fairly deep cultural things going on there (a symphony and an opera company as well as one or two legitimate theatres). Mostly I found the people friendly and willing to talk pretty openly of their dislike of politicians generally, their own in particular, who they accuse of trying to bilk them out of more of their hard earned money. Wait til they get the change over to the euro if that ever comes.

We made a kind of triangular tour of the country, going up to Inverness and on beyond to the lochs and wild country beyond, staying at Conon Bridge in Dingwall. If happiness exits on this Earth it is certain to be had in a place like Conon Bridge. The next day we went down along Loch Ness (spectacular drive) to Ballachulich and then on up through the creepy valley of Glencoe where some 4,000 men, women and children died during an ambush and massacre involving two clans back in the 18th century. It has a creepiness similar to Gettysburg. The rest of the trip through the countryside back to Edinburgh was more varied and strange than any similar distance I’ve ever traveled. Nice to have had the opportunity to see it all from my vantage point on the side we usually associate here with the driver’s seat in an air conditioned van.

Scotland left an indelible impression on me. It felt almost as familiar to me as though I were coming home. I do have Scottish ancestors. Oh, and by the way, I also sampled haggis and would it be a strange thing to say that I liked it right from the start? My liking for things Scottish extends also to the bagpipes. I have always liked the sound of them, the drone and the peculiar melodies that are sometimes played on them. Of course the only place I could reasonably take up that instrument (without annoying my neighbours) would be in Scotland.

The next time I go there I should like to go during late August, into September when the heather is in bloom as it turns all the hills purple. Such surreal landscapes already exist there, especially above the Grampians. Just imagine all that wild country turned lavender-blue.

Thank you, David. You paint a wonderful picture.

I have friends who are authors, and have been to Edinburgh for the festival, and came back with wonderful impressions of the place. I love the history of the area, and I too, love the bagpipes.

HOLY CARP!!!
I enjoy Edinburgh almost more than London. And I'm not even the tiniest bit Scottish.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!
