Four Jobs I've Held 1. web designer/programmer (for a chauvinistic T.V. show host who wanted quasi-pornography on his website -- he called them "viewer mail girls" -- my parents didn't think that was such a good job for a few 16 year olds , but of course we disagreed ;)) (and also for a local youth organization, which was much more fun, and I got community service credits for school) 2. private cello teacher (one student for 6 months and one for a year, when I was in high school, and another this last and current summers) 3. "gourmet chef" at a fast-food sub shop (for 6 months, until for some reason unknown to me they pretended money was missing from the register as an excuse to ask me to quit... not sure why they didn't simply fire me if they didn't want me there anymore, since no excuse is needed to fire employees...) 4. library assistant Four places I have lived. 1. Boston 2. Indianapolis suburb 3. Detroit suburb 4. Ann Arbor Four places I have been: 1. Montreal (with my dad for a medical conference) 2. Jerusalem (for free :excited:) 3. New York City (many times to visit family and jon_nyc) 4. Los Angeles (I went to a bar mitzvah at Dodger Stadium last year) Four of my favorite foods: 1. pastrami 2. black olive pizza 3. slightly chilled, slightly doughy bread 4. kishka Four Places I'd 1. Norway (not sure why -- sort of a gut desire -- must be Grieg) 2. Russia (I want very much to go to a conference in St. Petersburg in October, but it's so expensive...... :weeping:) 3. Israel (going for 2 weeks next month!) 4. San Francisco (going for 5 days next month! I'm also considering grad school at Berkeley... don't know much about the school yet, except the practice room policies suck, and one of the musicology professors is a huge celebrity in the music world.) |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences.

Ha! So did you sell them back to others at higher prices? Or did you work for a company on campus? A friend of mine just asked to buy one of my books, and I said I'd be happy to just give it to her if she wants it. I've written all over it, though, and filled in all the exercises -- but I guess a lot of students don't mind buying books with all of the exercises already filled in! |

No, I was buying used texts (grade school and high school) for a company that does replacements for districts as books get worn out, lost, damaged. Basically, buying books that districts were discarding as they got new series (math, language, science, etc) every few years. New texts for grade schools and high schools could be (this was about 15 years ago) in the $50 to $80 each range per student per subject, so the used market would have them for $20 to $40. I was able to buy them for a buck or two each from the schools, and resell them to the fulfillment house for $3 to $12. On a good day I'd be making 3 or 4 thousand dollars, but it is very seasonal work (end of the school year through the summer). It is all public funds -- the budgets for new series are set and replaced every few years. The book store managers/ principals were happy to get a few bucks each and mainly get rid of the old stock that they were phasing out. I was happy to help.

I thought that was you Jack. I know that woman's pic too. Riveting. I'll never forget her face. I think I'd like IT's text book buying job. With money like that I could stay home & play lots of piano in my off season! I want to know why Horace feels the way he does about Canada. I have little desire to see some provinces. I'd love to move to B.C. though. I remain real curious of the North. Someday I may travel there. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis
