HOLY CARP!!!
|
Along with all my icky "I love my kids and I don't want them to leave" stuff today, there was a good thing. We have a student who recently transferred in from a private school. Now, transfers from private schools are VERY rare (we don't have a lot of them here). To top it off, this kid is VERY bright. His parents gave us a heads up that he needs extra challenge in school. Now, we get this a LOT, and sometimes the parents are...overly optimistic about their child's abilities. However, upon talking to this kid, it was very apparent to me that they are correct. His homeroom teacher agreed. I touched base with my enrichment coordinator from the board to find out about how to get him added to the list (our lists are largely scores-based, which really bugs me, and we initially had no data on him - just observation). I thought I might be in for a fight. Then I got his scores, and sure enough, his math was VERY high. But his language was lower. However, his earlier scores were high enough in language that, if he had been in our board, he would have been automatically added to the list. I sent off an email, advocating that this kid be added to our enrichment list. I gave all the info - that his marks are...ok...he's not a teacher pleaser AT ALL. But it's SO obvious when one talks to him that he's well beyond his peers. I expected a bit of a fight - the language scores just don't indicate what I'm seeing. I was wrong! She told me that from our observations, his current math score, and his earlier scores, he sounds like an ideal candidate! We're having an enrichment opportunity for our family of schools next week, so I get to talk to him tomorrow and invite him. I gave his homeroom teacher the go ahead to call parents and give them the good news. I'm sure they'll be excited. They were less than thrilled with the board that he started out in (before the private school) because they didn't see it, so I'm sure it'll be a fun call for my colleague to make! ![]() |

A real nice victory. And a lucky kid to have a teacher like you who cares. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |
