George Will has a piece on the last US Veteran.

Here's Wiki's entry on surviving veterans. We're down to 12.

An interesting article, this Wiki piece lists the last known veterans of all the US wars. (or candidates for the last, since its often in dispute).

HOLY CARP!!!
Jon,

Yesterday I posted video of Mr. Buckles in George's thread. He is here this weekend, in Kansas City, being honored at the National WW1 Museum:

Everyone should watch the video, the guy is 107, and looks AMAZING, is well-spoken and very with it. We saw him again last night at the symphony concert at Union Station (which has a great view of the Memorial, so that's where they set up) and the thousands of people there gave him a standing O. That family must have some amazing genes. His daughter is interviewed on the video, and since he's 107, she can't be any spring chicken, but she looks very young.

HOLY CARP!!!
I didn't know there were so few left.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!
