HOLY CARP!!!
Today I Skyped for the first time.
A friend recommended it to me and Jose since we'll be apart for 9 months.
HOW COOL!

It is like teleconferencing.
Video and audio is seen and heard by you and another person with an Internet connection and a webcam.

It's Free!
I was amazed how good it looked and sounded.
I got to "meet" with a few old friend living in England.

It is 100 times better and personal than email or a phone call.
It is the next best thing to being there.

Sounds illegal. At least check out any side effects.

Kenny, if you and Jose both have Macs that meet the requirements, you can use a camera (many iMacs and laptops have them built in) and you can use iChat (built into the OS) for free.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

HOLY CARP!!!
Skype's free

We use it lots, just did this morning with our friends at Ft. Hood. I've SKyped to Australia, Ukraine, many places in the UK and Europe, and regularly to Killeen, Houston, Seattle, and Leavenworth. Meredith is on pretty regularly with her best friend who moved to Ohio.

It's the best.

I love it! I'm using it to take private Spanish lessons with a tutor who lives in Guatemala.

The video addition is great so that we can see facial expression etc. She even uses flash cards etc.

I met a woman recently who uses it to see her new grandchild grow from far away.

It's not illegal in the slightest. Unfortunately my computer is ill and can't cope with the phone calls, so I just use the chat function.

So any two people, as long as they have webcams on their computers, can use this, for free? Anywhere, anytime? Sounds wonderful, but I can't help thinking there must be some catch.....no?

I don't even think you need a webcam. I installed it on my Mac last night and was able to call my daughter's cell from the computer.

no, there's no catch

there are dozens of applications that two people with webcams can use to chat for free. MSN, WIN live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AIM...you can webcam chat with any of them, and lots of others.

Ok, I see now. Any computer to computer talk is free, and you pay when you connect with a cell phone or landline. That makes sense; it was the 'everything is free' bit that made me go hmmm. Sounds cool.

I called my daughter's cell and didn't get charged. At least as far as I know - I didn't enter any information, etc.

it's also free to 'mobile' chat with a phone as long as the person has the mobile version of the software on their phone. I can chat on my Blackberry same as on my computer. My internet package with t-mobile is unlimited, so while it isn't free, it doesn't cost me any more to chat than not to chat.
