Illusions

And have I often heard
The sound of voices calling me
In the still quiet darkness
Of the night.
But whether I should follow
Is a question not yet answered.
For what is a dream
That it should come true?
What is reality
That it should wake within me
A nameless longing
For the comfort of the
Still, quiet night
And the sound of voices calling me.

Feeling a little pensive today. Not sure what is going on, just thought I might get it down and see what follows.

Gosh. You're rude.
Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow.

Gosh. You're rude.

Oh give me a friggin break Sarah, it was an honest question. Just like most poetry, I get no meaning from the play of words.

It wasn't meant to hurt the author's feelings.

Well, at least *I* thought it was funny, Rick.

I was going to say something more rude, but out of concern for the author's pensiveness, I held back.

Fine. I just thought it was inappropriate to post such callousness after such a nice poem. I'm off your back now.

I'm sorry, I should have phrased it better.

Poetry is just something I'm not fond of just because I don't usually understand what the person's trying to say.

And I'd bet I could ask you, Aqua, and 89th, what Eileens poem really said to them, and you would all come up with different answers.

People do that with prose too, Rick. The point of any kind of creative writing is to have the reader relate to it in some way. It's automatic that this is going to be different for everybody.

Not all poetry is pretentious, meaningless crap.

Well I guess I wasn't that polite either. Sorry. I'm not usually a fan of poetry as such, but this one I thought I could at least caught a glimpse as to the meaning.

At the risk of sounding pedantic....poetry is supposed to mean something different to each reader. It is about evoking an emotion or two or three. It is about reaching deep into the reader and eliciting a response. It is organic and each reader brings something different to the reading.

All I can say in explanation is what it meant to me at the time of writing. BUT, that is not the definitive meaning. The poem is about standing on the precipice of life with big decisions to make, not wanting to make any of them but to stay in the comfort of the darkness dreaming of what might be. The minute you take one action.....you limit your future choices, but make a choice you must....hence the circular feel of the poem....it ends right back where it started.

I have really been missing the girl I used to be....before many of life's decisions. The poem was written in 1974, a year after graduating high school.

Bring to it what you will.....it is all good.

I liked your poem, Eileen. Creative minded people are often moody. Many of us here are creative people. I am - and sometimes, when our mood turns pensive, or blue, we want to create something to share our feelings at that moment.

The noncreative mind says "I'm sad. I don't know what to do." The creative mind says "I'm sad. I want to create something from it, to share it."

Doesn't matter if it's good, or bad. Other creative minded people see your work, and we understand.

A nameless longing
For the comfort of the
Still, quiet night
And the sound of voices calling me.

I find this last part rather painful. But even though I find it painful, I find it beautiful as well. Of course, I think of Denise when I read that part. And, I think of our family as it used to be before we lost her. And even though it's painful to think of her and what she must have experienced, I long for her voice. The only way I can hear her, is through my memories. And therefore, for me, the voices you speak of are nothing more than memories. And the painful part is that with each memory of her, I remember her pain.

sigh

I don't know if that makes sense to you. And most likely if I had read your poem 6 months ago, I would've gotten some completely different out of it.

In any case, I think your poem is beautiful. It spoke to me right away.

Peggy,

I hear my mother in those voices now. She died in 1990. I totally understand your interpretation. So much of what you say.....I feel too. I don't know why, but it comforts me that there is at least one other person on this planet that seems to share the same viewpoint.

Take care.....
