Saw the news reported through a Taiwanese satellite channel... A female police officer (a Ms. Chiang Xiao-Juen [phonic translation mine]) working at the China earthquake rescue site has started breast-feeding orphaned babies. The report says she's breast-feeding 8 to 9 babies a day, and has left her own six month old baby to the care of her parents while she's working at the rescue site. The report editorialized her compassionate act as having "made the children of the earth her own children" [translation mine]. Sure enough, Google turned up a blog entry highlighting her effort, and a picture: ![]() blog: http://viv.id.au/blog/?p=1739 source (Chinese): http://newspic.cn.yahoo.com/news/article/i...ry_show&p=89424

Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow. - Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross | |

I'd have guessed that there are some physical limits on how much milk a woman can produce per day that is well beyond feeding 8-9 babies. |

To be honest, I am a bit skeptical about the "8 to 9 babies a day" figure reported by the news channel, I just posted what I think I heard. It could have been "she has breast-fed 8 or 9 babies to date" and I just heard it wrong. Either way, its a commendable effort. |

She might be nursing each of the babies once or twice a day to supplement other feeding they are getting. If the babies are newborn and her baby is 6 months old and has been almost exclusively breast fed, she will have quite a lot of milk to go around. A newborn might manage to suckle a couple of ounces at a feed whereas a 6 month old baby can down 6-8 or more. Many women nurse twins, even triplets...the body pretty much is able to produce what is demanded of it as long as the woman is well fed and hydrated. |
