We committed 'home recording' again. A little Mozart K333, first movement. The second movement is done as well, and he's working on the third now. Sonata in B-flat, allegro |

He plays another instrument, or sings, doesn't he? A wind instrument? (the playing is wonderful!) |

SINGS? Actually, I encourage him to try to sing notes and intervals. It can't BUT help with piano. Alas, the voice is not his strong suit! His other instrument is the horn. He's actually quite good at it. Unfortunately his teacher is going to take a break next year from coming all the way up here from his home base in Virginia Beach (where he's the principal horn player for the Virginia Symphony). He will still teach out of Christopher Newport University so I'll have to schlep the kid there once per week to keep his training going. Oh well. |

HOLY CARP!!!

ah! the horn makes sense...the reason I asked is that he breathes with the phrase, which people seldom do unless they play an instrument they have to blow into, or are singers. It's interesting to me how much music there is in that breath...even if you're playing an instrument where breath control isn't a big contributing part of your technique. He would make an excellent collaborative pianist...either vocal or wind/brass accompanying, because he understands where the breathing goes. I don't think it's conscious, I think it's the result of experience, so I assumed he had some. That's outstanding...it will make him so much more interesting as a pianist, at least to my ear. |

Deb, You're right about the breathing. I never got good enough on a wind instrument to learn that lesson, which is probably why my phrasing is so carpy. He studied composition for a while, and may do so again if the schedule permits [note to self: yeah, right]. His composition teacher actually wanted him to consider elementary violin lessons on top of piano, horn and composition. I understood the theory. Writing for ensemble is helped if you know how all the separate pieces of the puzzle work. That argument might have worked better 100 years ago, when a kid could easily specialize in music at age 10. |

Wow, very nice! I always look forward to your son's recordings. One suggestion -- watch out for clipping the ends of phrases too short. Make sure the last note of every 2- or 3-note phrase isn't staccato. Otherwise, great as usual! I like his accents at the beginning of the development. |

 Well, some people might prefer this 'little Mozart.' ![]() Sam, Yeah, his teacher and I do nag him about not clipping the ends of those phrases. Sometimes carp still happens! |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

BTW, did anybody notice the zoom recorder that crept into the picture? It's sitting there, slightly blurred, on the couch in the foreground. I think I get a somewhat better sound output out of the zoom than I do from the internal microphone in the camera. |
