I dodged a bullet regarding Speed Racer, as Lucas had a playdate scheduled to go see it today. Unfortunately, the friend's mother called it off as she is ill. M&M's and I agreed to take Luke to the movies this evening as long as it was to one of these shows. He's fine with that, but now we need to decide which one. What do you think? |

BTW, the cinema showing Narnia is really cool! Almost IMAX cool. Of course, tickets will cost an extra $6 total, and another five bucks for gas.... |

i voted for Ironman, but not realizing it was for Luke -- I'd take him to see Narnia instead. |

We just came back from Narnia - a little disappointing actually. The oldest two kids were a little too old, and the villain looked a little too much like Saddam Hussein, but pretty good fun. Our oldest misbehaved throughout which didn't help. I'm afraid I told the little bugger he couldn't see Iron Man, which wiped the s*** eating grin clean off his face. |

I REALLY liked IronMan. I'm not 100% sold on taking Liam to it (though Rob took his kidlet, who ignored the realistic violence because he was so enamoured with the red suit.) My guess - both of you would like IronMan more than Narnia. |

Well, we did Iron Man. I'd give it a B+ or maybe even an A-. As far as comic book based movies, I'd place it under Spiderman, but above X-Men. About equal with Batman Begins. |

I agree with the Batman Begins similarity, but I freaking hated Spider Man. X-Men was "okay." |

I can get where you disliked Spiderman. Tobey isn't exactly the image you get in mind when thinking of Spidey. Plus there were alot of continuity issues for fanboys (and I'm probably counted in that number), but I resigned myself that some of these things would be necessary to make it work as a film for everybody. While I could nitpick things to death, the Spiderman film did the best job of bringing through the essence and fun of the character (yes, he was a bit too emo-boy for my taste, I widh they had shown him enjoying being Spidey a little more, and made him a little more wisecracking, but overall they carried through the fun of the character. X-Men sucked. The only redeeming aspects of those movies was being able to "see" them use their powers. Colossus armoring up, Iceman icing up, etc... The acting and scripts, though.... Batman worked really well, but almost not as Batman. The area where it failed was in the actual characterization of the Bat. They didn't show much of his most important attribute, IMO. Hos mind. His strategies. His detective skills. Those are his most important qualities, IMO. Iron Man wins as far as continuity, and staying as close to his origins and character. |

I've never been too impressed with Spiderman (Tobey was too nerdy) but those movies did seem to reinvent the comic book movie and Hollywood has been milking that ever since with other various movies. X-Men was ok...much better as a comic book than a movie, never felt too inspired to see those movies (although of course I did). Batman Begins was absolutely terrific. Possibly my favorite superhero movie to date. Their transformation from the earlier (and goofy) Batman films to the new dark and mature style is fantastic. I can't wait to see the new one that is coming to theaters in less than 2 months! Iron Man was great...very enjoyable. Robert Downey Jr did a great job...perfect character in and out of the suit! Cheeseburger first. |

When is the last time anything original came out of Hollywood along these lines. They have been ripping off comic books and children's stories and recycling old characters for so long now I think they have forgotten how. |

Nahh, no way. Look at LotR. The technology to do the effects is well established. They just dropped the ball in making good movies; X-Men could have been awesome. |

Oh I wasn't talking about the effects, I agree with you there (as well as it dropping the ball). |
