In the 'what's for dinner' thread, M&M mentioned that she dislikes watermelon. It got me thinking, I don't think there are any fruits that I don't like. Of course some seem not worth the effort (say Pomegranates), but there are none that I've tried that I don't like. Of course there are fruits I haven't tried, but I've tried some obscure ones, especially when living in Latin America. As for vegetables, I can think of one that I don't care for cooked (bell pepers), but I'm happy to eat them raw. The only one I can't get myself to eat are Brussels sprouts. I can't get beyond the horrid smell when they cook. Rachel tells me that if I can get that out of my mind, I'd like them. But I've yet to be able to do that. Are there any fruits or vegetables you don't like? |

HOLY CARP!!!

There are a few fruits and veggies that I don't really care for, but nothing that makes me feel the extreme repulsion that meat and a few other foods (MAYO ) do. I never eat bananas, though I do like banana bread. I'm not an asparagus fan. I think my mom used to joke about it making your pee smell, and I can't say I've been too compelled to give it a shot since. |

Tomatoes. I like tomato sauce, but not tomato soup, especially that smell of tomato soup that everyone else seems to love... ![]() Also mushrooms... for some reason I like the mushroom flavor in soup, but not if there are actually still mushrooms in it. Too rubbery! I should try pineapple again, because I've avoided it since I was very young, and maybe my tastes have changed since then. It smells good! And I don't like pickles, or green olives, or refried beans, or granny smith apples (too tangy)... There's this guy who came over to my house once for a holiday dinner, and he was convinced that disliking any foods was a weakness. The problem is, he absolutely hated olives. So he sat there forcing himself to eat olive after olive, because he figured the more he ate them, the less he'd hate them. It was very funny to watch the expressions on his face.

I can't stand fennel, neither raw nor cooked, the same goes for green beans (not that you should eat them raw anyway). I don't like cooked tomatoes, but I adore them raw. OTOH, I can eat Brussel sprouts when they're grilled, but not raw. |

With you on brussel sprouts, Jon. Every now and then Mrs. G insists we have it, and I graciously (?) pass on eating them. I've been told that there is a genetic link to people's dislike of brussel sprouts. Off to wiki to check that out. |

Aha! Scientific studies of why foods such as Brussels sprouts and stout beer are horribly bitter-tasting to some people but palatable to others are shedding light on a number of questions, from the mechanisms of natural selection to understanding how our genes affect our dietary habits. Dr. Stephen Wooding, a population geneticist at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, studies how slight variations in genes give rise to variations in traits among a given human population. Part of Dr. Wooding's research focuses on variations in the genes responsible for bitter-taste receptors, tiny receptacles on the tongue that intercept harsh-tasting chemicals from food. Each of these genes comes in several forms, and the forms you carry help determine how you perceive bitter-tasting compounds. The ability to taste or not taste bitter foods might have played a role in human evolution and may today account for such health-related behaviors as smoking and vegetable consumption, Dr. Wooding said. He will present an overview of his research on the bitter-taste receptor today in San Francisco at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The title of his talk is "Evolution: A Study in Bad Taste?" |

would love to get your reaction on this fruit called the Durian. It is one of those things that you either love it or hate it, no middle ground. I just cannot get myself to like it.

mmmmm Brussel sprouts! There's not any vegetables or fruits that I can think of that I dislike enough to say that I won't eat them at all. Well, maybe coconut... |

Cantaloupe. It's so pretty, and good for you, but I just about gag trying to get even a mouthfull down. I try every couple of years, because I want to like it, but, alas. Only other fruit or veg I can think of that I don't like is ripe bananas. Even the smell of someone else eating one makes me feel ill. I only like them just past the green stage. Oh, and lima beans. But that's not really food, so probably doesn't count. And put me in the loving brussel sprouts camp. They've got to be cooked right though. An overcooked brussel sprout is a bad bad thing. |

Oh, I also like asparagus as well. I seem to like most foods that most people dislike. I love liver, as long as it's warm. When it starts cooling...

Yum! I'm not too keen on squash, although I will eat it most of the time if served. I HATE mushrooms and I think they're the only fruit or veg I will pick out of my food.

My dad hates them, too. When my older brother was a toddler, he *loved* beets, and for this reason my mom always loved to take him shopping. They'd be going down an aisle, and another kid would be begging for chocolates, chips, etc, and my 3-year-old brother would yell at my mom: "I want beets! Mommy, let's get beets!!" |

Absolutely despise bananas - the texture, taste - GAG~! I like most vegetables, but there are a few exceptions. I hate those big bright green starchy green peas and fordhook lima beans, and don't like eggplant either. |

I love beets. Especially ones you've just pulled out of your garden and cooked immediately. So rich and earthy and super yummy. I love them steamed and roasted and made into yummy borscht. Or cold, in salads. I also think raw green beans, straight from the garden are one of greatest treats in summer. I gotta go plant some stuff, I'm making myself hungry.

I keep trying to get her to try it more. But she won't budge. Her dislike of it has even spread to Luke. If mommy doesn't like it, he doesn't like it. I keep trying though. I keep buying watermelons, trying to get them to eat it, but in the end they won't try and I'm stuck having to eat the whole thing myself. You think I'd learn my lesson, but I keep trying 4-5 times a year. I think it might be time to try again!

I've always thought raw beans contained a toxin which is only destroyed by cooking? |
