I posted about this in another thread but since the title was 'Hey Pianojerome' it might not have been noticed. I'm recruiting for sight reading (virtual) summer camp... http://well-temperedforum.groupee.net/eve/...3255#7920043255 |

I might sign up Jon. I'll think about it a bit, but I've just gotten myself back on the old piano bench and have pledged a half hour a day, no excuses to try to knock the rust off. I'm no where near the league you are in, but I do need the discipline. I'll see if adding 15 min. or so of sight reading is doable right now.

I'm in. Not sure what I'll sight-read though... maybe I'll pick up that chorales book again. When I did my sight-reading class 2 years ago, the teacher had us sight-reading Beethoven sonatas *really* slowly, and I was horrible at it then, so maybe I'll try that again this summer... well, whatever I read, I'll be reading! |

I bought the first one, FWIW. But I was just going by what Horace wrote. H&R didn't have the other, so I wasn't faced with this choice. The first one also has the advantage of being in stock... |

I like the one I have (the first one) because of the large type and the spiral binding which allows it to lay flat. No idea what the second one is. |

Is anyone else doing this? I've been doing this religiously since summer started. I've been through about 90 of the Bach Chorales (doing 2 a day), about 50 Scarlatti Sonatas (1 a day, sometimes more), all the 2 part inventions, all the not-too-fast movements from the LvB Sonatas (say Allegretto and slower), and I just started on Chopin (with the Nocturnes). I'm still doing 2 Chorales a day plus one Scarlatti Sonata, in addition to the Chopin. Just today I started doing the Chorales with my Clav set to 'Chorus' and the Scarlatti with it set to 'Harpsichord'. Its a nice change, I especially like doing the Chorales that way, they sound much better. Besides being great reading practice, its a great way to increase one's familiarity with the repertoire. I read through about 50 LvB Sonata movements - there is some great stuff in there. When I get better at this I'll go back to the Sonatas and read through the faster movements (at a much reduced tempo, of course). |

Do you believe it has improved your sight reading? I think I said I was in, but have not done anything about it. |

I am doing some, but on a much lighter, smaller scale. I'm working through my son's old RCM books, but selectively. I probably average only 10-15 minutes a day, but can see progress.

There's no question it has improved my reading ability. Its also a welcome respite from practicing the same piece every day - which I still do, but now that is a welcome respite from the mental concentration of sight reading. All while I'm becoming much more familiar with reams of repertoire. An improvement all the way around. |

well first I decided to practice my repertoire from the score, which meant I was getting decent sight reading practice whenever i was at the piano. (I am not a believer that sight reading must be done on completely new music to be of benefit, and I think my sight reading weakness is largely attributabe to the fact taht I've always memorized repertoire and never practiced from score.) But then I decided to try a different more structured way to learn repertoire, by marking every 1 or 2 measures as a start point, and practicing only one or two measures at a time, cycling over and over, which makes it impossible not to memorize. This has turned out to be a very effective idea for a number of reasons, but now I'm not reading while I practice anymore. So I have to get back to dedicated sight reading. |

Horace, I know a lot of people who do that - I never have been able to. It has been hard enough for me just to make myself practice hands separate from time to time. I just dig in and keep playing the whole damn thing until I have it. Now at least I am working on Moonlight Sonata, first movement, which requires me to at least break it up and practice the four pages separately. |

I was pretty much doing just that too, but discovered that for the rep I'm trying to learn, doing it that way would put me into tuesday of next year before I had it decently learned... Going one or two measures at a time makes learning a piece a much less intimidating prospect for me and it gets me to the piano .... I practiced for like 5 hours on Sunday and it was 5 good hours of learning new notes. At the rate I went I can learn and memorize a bach prelude in about a week which is fantastic for me. The grueling part is writing in each 'start point' meticulously, with the exact fingering for all the held notes, etc. It took me a couple hours to get through a two page piece, but in the end I think it's worth it. Plus if one ever stumbles in performance, a memorized 'start point' is just around the corner. There are a ton of reasons why this is a graet way to practice, I think. |

Since I have almost no ability to retain piano score, almost all of my playing is sight reading. It always looks like it did the first time to me. However, as of late, I've been doing a lot more sight reading, especially the sort that is put-up or shut-up. I have a crate of books I drag with me to these dance classes. If the teachers ask for something specific, I'll find it, 5-6-7-8 and make the piano do something that resembles the music they expect to hear. I like sight reading. It's the only thing I'm really good at on piano. |
