Question for techies; regarding Mac purchase

For a low-intensity user like me, is it worth spending the extra coin going for 4G of memory rather than 2?

Typical use for me consists of having a single browser open and a single excel session. Occasionally itunes is up.

Is 2G sufficient or will I wish I bought 4?

2ndary question - if I buy a new iMac with 2G and later decide to upgrade, can i add memory on my own?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

How much more? You are like me - I really don't do anything resource intensive. I find lower end systems are as good or better for me than paying for more. I just don't use it.

If it is over $100 or so I probably would not. We have a 2GB Macbook and it runs quite speedily on that. My only complaint is that actually starting Microsoft Office apps is a little bit slow. Once they are up they run fine.

Its $200 for the extra memory. I'm trying to figure out if I'm being cheap or frugal...

I'd wait. You should be able to upgrade later if you need it. But based on what you are doing? I seriously doubt you would.

Actually, it seems they have two slots and either put in 1GB or 2GB simms (do they still call them simms or am I dating myself?). So I could be in a situation where I'd have to buy the entire 4G, not just an additional 2G. Not sure if that matters.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Hmm. Maybe better to go ahead then, ifyo are in doubt. Then you know for sure.

Buy the extra memory. Given how long you'll keep it, even if you don't need it now, you might need it in the future.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Finally
Two gigs is probably enough for most things on a Mac. I have 2 in my Mac in Wisconsin and I do fine. I have iTunes, Safari, Firefox and occasionally Word running at once. Sometimes, I even use iDVD to burn a DVD in the background. Besides Apple memory is too expensive. They want $200, you can probably find it for about $110.

Installation is easy. Unscrew a plate on the bottom of the iMac, pull the old RAM (easy to do) pop in the new, and you're done. Takes 5 minutes (after you get all the cables sorted out.

HOLY CARP!!!
500MB has always been enough for me.

Unless you are doing video editing, I can't imagine why would need 4, or even 2.

jon,

You should spend the $200 to get the extra memory. Not because you need it (you don't), but because you want to help stimulate the economy. I know you didn't qualify for the tax refund, but you should still do your part anyway. Ask not what this 2G of RAM can do for you, but ask what that $200 can do for your country.
