Congratulations Improv ![]() My condolences Plays. My Gosh Plays: Do organize the boy fast. Don't let him sink during the transition. Like on the couch. I'm not looking forward to my own *horror* of it here (think CM, Blue Grass & Celtic 24/7). At least you have an escape plan. We sure need another house. |

HOLY CARP!!!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. And thanks for letting an old fart like me hang out here with all of you. I guess now I'll be posting on my own time. I worked for this company for 31 1/2 years and can't believe how quickly the time flew by. As most of you know, I was in the IT department of a Fortune 100 company. I started out writing cobol programs for the mainframe in the early 80's, VAX ( hated that) and ultimately Turbo Pascal application development along with Visual Basic the last ten years. I was fortunate enough to love my job. I would tell people I would do the job even if they didn't pay me.But over the last 5 to 7 years, most of the really cool application development was outsourced (usually to India) and we were relegated to contractor management and quality control of the crap coming back to us from India. After 25 years of working on some really cool state of the art technology, the thrill was gone. It was time to go. And to tell the truth, I was ready. I posted a couple of months ago about the downsizing that my company had announced and an offer of a very generous severance package to volunteer to leave. I took it. It was an offer I couldn't refuse. So now, after working for the last 41 years, I don't have to set the alarm clock tonight. I may sleep late tomorrow... I may not. And it doesn't matter to me either way. I left my building this morning around 11 o'clock with a couple of my co-workers that I've worked with for the last quarter century. The three of us drove up the street and by 11:45, we were hoisting our second beer. Man... It was before noon on a workday and we were working on getting drunk, unemployed and having the best time. I hope tomorrow is just as good. Another friend who retired told us recently, "Retirement is like being 9 years old again. You get up in the morning, put on your clothes and go outside and play. The only requirement of the day is to be home in time for dinner." I'm so looking forward to getting up in the morning and going outside to play.

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. | |

Finally

Congratulations on a what sounds like a really great career and what sounds like a great way to step away from it. With any luck, I'll be following in your footsteps in two years (or perhaps sooner). I'll hoist one for you tonight, Improv. You're my new hero! |
