Obama is getting pwn3d by this...and I think he's going to give *another* press conference on the issue. I think the best thing he can do right now is ignore it (and call Wright and plead with him to stop). I hope it continues...gives McCain a better chance with every passing minute. |

Obama's press confeence today made it very clear, at least by his parsing of words and some subtle body language, that he'd clearly like the Reverend Wright to go away. Now. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis

I'm wondering if Obama's best strategy might be to withdraw from his candidacy now - while he's in a strong position - let Hillary have it. Wright is worth millions to John McCain. The fact that the idiot hasn't the slightest idea of how divisive he is and the way he reacts - couldn't have been better scripted if Karl Rove was writing his material. If Obama leaves now, it might actually give him a better chance later - depending on his true colors and how he performs as a senator. As things stand now, he was going to have a tough road - but thanks to Wright, the road leads to a ditch. |

It would seem Reverend Wright isn't the only minister Obama's having words with. http://www.nypost.com/seven/04292008/news/...bama_108577.htm |

I figured it would be the good Reverend Al, savior of black people only. So his idea is that blacks should riot and more get shot? THAT's a good idea, eh? It almost makes me want to support Obama. To have a black leader standing up and being the leader of ALL Americans would be an awesome message. |

I know this isn't really the case - but I still almost think the last week has been carefully choreographed theater. Obama's previous distancing from Wright was shown to be inadequate. The public still felt less comfortable with Obama over the Wright business, and this attitude wasn't going to just go away by itself. Obama needed another stab at putting the issue to rest, and in a way that didn't merely highlight how lame his earlier attempt actually was. So now, Wright goes on a whirlwind tour, spouting all of his hatred and lunacy in such a clear-cut and flagrant way that it gives Obama a "second chance" to clearly, unambiguously separate himself from Wright. Wright didn't really say anything different, but he put an exclamation mark on it all, and made sure everyone understood his positions weren't just past beliefs taken out of context. And he made his latest comments in a way that wasn't just defensive, but were done in an offensive, in-you-face manner that had to be responded to. It forced (or enabled?) Obama to distance himself from Wright in a way that he failed to do in his first attempt - which could possibly remove the "pastor problem" as a major issue in the general election. I know, conspiracy theories, black helicopters... like I said, I don't really believe this, but sadly, we've gotten to the point where wondering about it doesn't seem to be all that far a stretch. Or maybe the guy's just a nut.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Of course he's outraged...now. It only took him 20 years to grow the outrage - when it became politically expedient to be outraged. When it was politically expedient to be a member of the Rev. Wrights church, he was silent, nodding assent to the man's racism. It's all about nuance, you know. Well, then, there's the possibility, of course, that he wasn't in church on those days. Really. |

At this point, I think that's the way he's hoping to spin it. But even if he wanted to do that, I think he blew it again. All he did was get all self-righteous and indignant at Wright. And for what? Nothing that Wright hadn't already said before, that Obama made only nuanced, polite sidesteps from. This time, what really got his panties in a wad was what he perceived as a personal slight, in Wright claiming that Obama had distanced himself for mere political expediency, and that like any politician, he was only going to say things in order to enhance his electability. So, full of righteous indignation, Obama went back to the microphones and, I think, shot a hole in his other foot. As I said in another thread, I don't think the right answer is the gentlemanly "distancing" that he tried before, or the indignant "separation" that he tried yesterday. I think the best way would have been the simple truth:
