A group of us went to Laurel Caverns, and did the eight hour unguided spelunking trip (not for kids under 10, though, lots of climbing, crawling, basically real spelunking), then camped for two days at Ohiopyle. We then rented canoes and did the two day trip down the Yough to West Newton. (The campground on the Yough was in Connelsville, and right outside a pub where I was friends with the owner and captain of his dart team). From West Newton, we returned the canoes, drove back to Ohiopyle, camped for a few more days, then biked down to MD. (The bike trails at Ohiopyle can be followed all the way to DC). It was a good time, and nice area.

I second that. Ohiopyle's a nice area. Only been there once but it was a good time.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I like L'sD's suggestion of the Ohiopyle area. You might broaden that to include the entire Laruel Highlands area.

Here's another suggestion a little farther afield but not way across the country: Chautauqua County, NY. The Chautauqua Institution was and is a long-standing summer retreat of a certain character, but that region also has a number of other attractions.

If you and your hubby want to get away for the evening for alittle romance, Aqua and 89th are available as babysitters, and don't forget, there's a reason why they say Virginia is for Lovers:wink:

Hey, I'm the damn nanny here! :P

Lots to do in this area, R2, but if you're looking for some more nature-y stuff I'd have to add to the recommendations for upstate NY or the VT/NH area. It would be MUCH cheaper, as well. I've had many a fantastic vacation in the White Mountains region, though I think that would be a bit of a drive for you.

Thanks, all. I am talking to the other family tonight. I'll let you know if we narrow the field at all.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Of course if you go upstate NY there's lots of wineries to visit. ^_^

But Ohiopyle looks very cool!

The big wineries are mostly in the western end of the Finger Lakes region of NY on west to the Lake Erie shoreline in Pennsylvania east of Erie so they're a reasonable distance from Pittsburgh. Let me throw another idea in the opposite direction into consideration: West Virginia State Parks

Some of the WV parks have a rather large variety of recreational opportunities as well as some nice accommodations and they're not very far south. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains and the area around Asheville, NC, but that's quite a bit farther. The suggestions for New Hampshire, Vermont, the Adirondacks, etc. could all be appealing, but they're a very hard one day drive from Pittsburgh. Not necessarily fun for a family with younger children.

Good point about WV, Al. Another option I would consider (still within a relatively easy drive) would be heading up towards Erie. Not all the way, but there are some nice parks and areas just south of there. Conneaut Lake, perhaps.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
