I second that. Ohiopyle's a nice area. Only been there once but it was a good time. |

I like L'sD's suggestion of the Ohiopyle area. You might broaden that to include the entire Laruel Highlands area. Here's another suggestion a little farther afield but not way across the country: Chautauqua County, NY. The Chautauqua Institution was and is a long-standing summer retreat of a certain character, but that region also has a number of other attractions. Big Al |

Hey, I'm the damn nanny here! Lots to do in this area, R2, but if you're looking for some more nature-y stuff I'd have to add to the recommendations for upstate NY or the VT/NH area. It would be MUCH cheaper, as well. I've had many a fantastic vacation in the White Mountains region, though I think that would be a bit of a drive for you. |

Thanks, all. I am talking to the other family tonight. I'll let you know if we narrow the field at all. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
Of course if you go upstate NY there's lots of wineries to visit. But Ohiopyle looks very cool! |

The big wineries are mostly in the western end of the Finger Lakes region of NY on west to the Lake Erie shoreline in Pennsylvania east of Erie so they're a reasonable distance from Pittsburgh. Let me throw another idea in the opposite direction into consideration: West Virginia State Parks Some of the WV parks have a rather large variety of recreational opportunities as well as some nice accommodations and they're not very far south. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains and the area around Asheville, NC, but that's quite a bit farther. The suggestions for New Hampshire, Vermont, the Adirondacks, etc. could all be appealing, but they're a very hard one day drive from Pittsburgh. Not necessarily fun for a family with younger children. Big Al |

Good point about WV, Al. Another option I would consider (still within a relatively easy drive) would be heading up towards Erie. Not all the way, but there are some nice parks and areas just south of there. Conneaut Lake, perhaps. |
| The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it. | |
