HOLY CARP!!!
|
My family is considering taking a week-long vacation in August with another family. We will have a total of 4 kids, under the age of 10. We would like to rent a house with at least 4 bedrooms and 2 and a half baths. We want a newer, updated house with internet access and newer furniture, rather than a cottage with a screen door that slams and old appliances (you know the image). Ideally it would be within driving distance of Pennsylvania and NYC, and would be moderately priced. All of us are rather pale, so we're leaning away from direct-in-the-sun summer beach vacations. Any destination suggestions? I'm at a loss, other than Deep Creek, MD. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
Go upstate NY or the northern Ohio shore. Sandusky is nice and has Cedar Point, etc. The Finger Lakes are great, Lake Ontario is very nice - Sodus Bay is quite lovely, or there is 'The Grand Canyon of the East' west of Rochester - forget what it is called. You have said what accommodations you want, but not what your kids want to do. That woudl help. Will they fish? Sail? Ride horses? Veg out in the woods? |

Western Massachusetts, or New Hampshire, or upstate New York. You can be by a lake without being by a beach. Less moderately priced would be Vermont. |

ZOOOOOM!

If you end up going there I can give you some good advice on where to go. ![]() Although I must say, the lake from Memorial Day to Labor Day is nutty. During the summer months in Garrett County, tourons abound. |

http://www.jacksonholechamber.com/ I know its a long drive but so worth it. Your kids will never forget the drive out west and the range of activiteis here is staggering. I have many connections in the area and there would be no problem finding you a vacation rental up to your spec. If you wanted to stay closer to home I would suggest Acadia Nat'l Park in Maine or a lakeside home on Lake Champlain, VT. But really take a look at JH. |

Please expand. Tourons? How nutty? Mik, the kids would like to swim and hike, I think. My boys would enjoy 9 holes of golf. Board games, cookouts, maybe a few restaurants. Maybe a day trip to see something close by (historical or natural or whatever). |

"Touron" = "tourist moron." We don't much like them outsiders. But, you're from Pennsylvania so you prob'ly talk similar enough, and you don't have VA license plates so you'd get by okay. The actual lake would be nuts. If you wanted to take a boat out, well... if the weather's nice you're going to see an a$$load of traffic. And certain hotspots would be full of people too, like the Honi and whatever's going on at Wisp that day. But if your kids are into hiking and cookouts and such, can't much think of a better place. And I could tell you a few restaurants to check out that would probably not have a ridiculous wait. As for historic stuff... the lake is housed around the oldest mountain range on the planet, it's steeped in history.

It is beautiful, yes. I think our price range is maybe too low to get a decent place there, though. I'm looking for a house that is about $3000 for the week, to be split between two families. Probably a fairy tale in most resorts. |

How about DC/Baltimore? Go see the monuments, an outdoor concert suitable for the kids at Wolftrap, Visit the Smithsonian, drive down to Busch Gardens, or Six Flags, or King's Dominion. There's the Air & Space Museum out in Northern Virginia with flight simulators and a real Space Shuttle. Then head up to Baltimore and visit the Inner Harbor and the the Aquarium. There's also a great zoo downtown DC. Plus, you can meet Aqua, 89th, Improv, Plays, Opti (your in town this summer, right?), M&M's and myself! All within a four hour drive from home! Oh, and don't forget visiting the Blue Ridge mountains and Luray Caverns! We're also a short drive from Ocean City, if you did want to spend a day at the beach, or you can always just go to the Bay and visit Annapolis! Olus, if you wanted to, you could stop in Deep Creek for a day or two on the way out (or back) and/or stop in Hershey and Hershey Park depending on which way you drive. Heck, make a circle and do both! If you and your hubby want to get away for the evening for alittle romance, Aqua and 89th are available as babysitters, and don't forget, there's a reason why they say Virginia is for Lovers!

http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/11380.html Another option is to rent a fully furnished house for 2-3 k for the month, even if you are only going to be there for 1-2 weeks. |

That is a very cool idea, esp. with the babysitting options that you mentioned. Alas, our family did the Washington DC vacation within the past 3 years. |

Here you go. Nice and close by. It won't cost you hundreds of dollars in gas. Water slides, nature trails, equestrian trails, Laurel Caverns, canoeing, if you want a day of comfort you can go to Nemacolan Woodlands. Rent the whole place for $1500 for six nights Plus, you won't lose two days travelling. |

Wow. That could be a lot of fun. That's a huge amount of acres. One could run around naked without risk of being seen.

Here's a nice place. Might be a little too big, though! You might need to host a TNCR stayover/gettogether at this place! I did a two week vacation there in my early twenties. |

A group of us went to Laurel Caverns, and did the eight hour unguided spelunking trip (not for kids under 10, though, lots of climbing, crawling, basically real spelunking), then camped for two days at Ohiopyle. We then rented canoes and did the two day trip down the Yough to West Newton. (The campground on the Yough was in Connelsville, and right outside a pub where I was friends with the owner and captain of his dart team). From West Newton, we returned the canoes, drove back to Ohiopyle, camped for a few more days, then biked down to MD. (The bike trails at Ohiopyle can be followed all the way to DC). It was a good time, and nice area. |
