HOLY CARP!!!
|
Rob and I went to see the Rochester Philharmonic on Saturday. Mozart's 25th Symphony, Stravinsky Violin Concerto (with soloist Jennifer Koh, who I really enjoyed), and Sibelius' 5th Symphony. The guest conductor, Alexander Mickelthwate, did a nice job bringing out the intensity of the Mozart. Though we were wondering if he's a big fan of brass, because in all of the pieces, the brass seemed to dominate a little more than one would expect. The trombones and trumpets were superb, but the french horns were sloppy - especially noticeable in the Mozart, but we could hear it throughout. Other than that, an excellent concert. ![]() We went to Sienna Grill and Bar (the place we wanted to go had unfortunately closed down since the last time we were down town, so we just wandered St. Paul Street and found this place). Beautiful restaurant, nice atmosphere, fantastic drinks, and very good service. We intended to have an appetizer and a salad and a few drinks before heading to the concert. The appetizer Rob ordered was vile. He was so turned off by it that he wasn't even willing to try a salad. Since my appetizer (which was one of the specials for the evening) was also underwhelming (not inedible, just not any better than something one would purchase in the frozen food section) we decided to leave. We ended up grabbing hummus in a little hole in the wall Meditteranean place on the way to the theatre. Afterwards, we went to another restaurant, had another appetizer, a couple of drinks, and shared dessert. A good time was had by all. Even the horrible dish at Sienna wasn't a complete loss, as we got to make wisecracks about the chef for the rest of the evening.

Fantastic! I am jealous because from my perspective getting out of the house for some night-life sounds really nice right about now. Lucky girl. |

Sounds like a fun weekend, dol! I like eating like that; just having appetizer type foods and portions. Snacking, basically.

What appetizer was it? (Just so I know what to avoid in the future. In general, I try to avoid any appetizers that have been breaded/battered and then deep-fried. I don't think I've ever had a good one of those. )

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

It was a beef tenderloin carpaccio with cracked pepper mousse in a soy broth with steamed mushrooms. Sounded lovely. However, rather than the very small portion of tenderloin one would expect, he received a soft-ball sized portion of mousse with the tenderloin wrapped around. The mousse tasted good on its own. But as you took the meat off (it was in 8" long strips, so it was quite the procedure) this huge ball o' mousse fell into the broth, disintegrated, and became a slimy, unappetizing mess. Sounded delicious - very poorly executed. |

Yeah, sounds good. Sorry it didn't work out. Though there are so many things going on in that one dish, execution would be key. |

I'm glad to hear that a bad appetizer didn't ruin the night. Is Rob still trying to emigrate so you don't have that marathon trip to be together? Big Al |

HOLY CARP!!!

He's working on it. He's applied for a bunch of jobs in Detroit. He initially just applied within his company, but then they put a (temporary) hiring freeze on, so all of those postings were cancelled. So now he's applied to a bunch of jobs with other companies. Hopefully he'll hear something soon. He STILL doesn't have a passport. I'm going to go and strangle someone in their passport office. His first application went in in August, and his second went in in January. Sigh. |
