Wow - she does have a great eye with the camera. Excellent photos. :thumb:

I think you should take a gamble and get her a fancy camera.

My suspicion is that she'll appreciate it and care for it. She'll understand that if she loses it or breaks is, there's no replacement on its way. Just a hunch.

Sometimes a child shows talent, initiative, and passion about something, and it's fun to jump on it as a parent.

Great photos.

There's something to be said for small digital cameras that fit in your pocket. There's many a time I wished I had my camera with me, but carrying my Nikon slr around is just too much most of the time. I've thought of buying a cheaper camera that I could just leave in the car and not worry about.

Besides, a good photographer can take great photos with a cheap camera, as evidenced by Merry's results. Remember - many of the early ones started out with a "pin hole" camera.

I was thinking about that too, 1hp. I think it would be nice for her to learn what better cameras can do and how they do it, but the portability of the one she has now can't be beat. She's done a good job taking care of it for a year. She did lose the USB cable for a while, but we found it (it has a weird non-standard jack). Because of dance, she's very disciplined. She has class and/or rehearsal every day, and she is totally on her own with all her gear. In fact, I don't really know of any kids her age who are as together about "stuff" as she is, so maybe for the next occasion that comes up we could get a camera with more flexibility.

Which Nikon do you have? Your photographs are always breathtaking.

I got into photography at as a young adult, and my dad did something interesting. He gave me his old camera on a long-term loan. It was a good camera (some cool lenses and flashes), but nothing was automatic. No batteries, and I had to manually set everything and focus it myself. I learned an immense amount about how a camera works, which made going to these new-fangled things better, since I understood better what it was doing for me.

I, alas, had to develop my own film in a darkroom, though, which was a big commitment. When I got into photography, no one really used the computer yet.

Great photos

good advice about a nicer camera.

I think that the way she frames images shows talent and is obviously the result of her composition and not accidental. That is the greatest asset to her images. A new camera would help but only if it isn't too complex.

Hey, I did that too.

I did Journalism back in high school. Worked in the darkroom many a time (and by "worked in the darkroom," I mean we propped a chair in the revolving door to keep others from coming in, read Mad and Maxim magazines and listened to RHCP, and once in awhile developed pictures to keep from failing.)

Very cool process, if you think about it. It's all chemistry.

VERY weird. I looked at this thread earlier and thought I posted about Merry's pictures, but my post isn't there!

Deb, I'd def. encourage Merry to get more into it. I think she took some pretty high quality stuff there! I'm just a layman but honestly, I'd suggest getting her on a black and white camera. Taking out the pretty colors really helps you develop the other components of a good picture.

Yeah, I had a lot of fun in the darkroom, too. Esp. the pitch black room where you pop the film out of the canister. Someone inevitably dropped something, and no one could leave until we found it and everyone finished sealing the film again. :o

I was terrible at processing the film, though. I was a dust magnet.

like having so many options that there are menu pages and lit up icons everywhere that even a mature adult would have trouble with. If the instruction manual is 200+ pages I would go with a easier model.

Why? She said she was a dust magnet. She'd mess up the pictures.

ah...not to worry...teenaged kids are amazing when it comes to that stuff. Give them a never before seen device, and within an hour or two, they'll have figured out everything it can do, including a bunch of stuff that it's not supposed to be able to do. It's 'interesting' (my new favorite word, apparently!) how their little minds work.

I love these photos!!!

Deb - I'm always using photos in my class when I do lessons on connections, inferencing, predictions, etc. I also use them for writing prompts. I've been trying to get a lot better about using Creative Commons photos for my lessons, so if I share the lesson with other teachers I'm not violating any copyrights. Could you do me a favour and ask if Merry would mind me using some of those in future lessons? I'm not sure exactly for what right now - I just know that a lot of them will be useful at some point. If she's ok with it, I just add a "by Merry ____" tagline to the bottom. (I can either use her last name, or if she prefers to use a pseudonym, that's fine too - a lot of the Creative Commons tagged photos on Flickr use a pseudonum).

Thanks!

 And they'll actually remember where/how etc. That's why we have teenagers; they can be so useful. :hat:

I tried to have a teenager but all I got was this crying infant who appears to be some kind of a cross between a howler monkey and a gnome.

He's no good at chores either.

I love the one of the car headlight.
Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow.
