I think this is interesting; pictures Merry took

HOLY CARP!!!
Merry just turned 14. I bought her an inexpensive Nikon 'coolpix' camer last summer at Best Buy. It's very small and she carries it in her purse. She takes pictures all the time. It's interesting to me because her pictures are different than I expected. It's a point and shoot camera, but it looks to me like she's doing more than pointing it and shooting it

I'm very impressed by that picture of the chairs. Ordinary objects made beautiful by the artist! Clearly nothing about that picture is by accident. That's talent!
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I was thinking the same thing Kenny!

Damn cats!

Yes, we have two of them.

Never again.

Anyway,

WOW Deb! She definitely has "the eye".

My cat is very respectfully listening to me play...can't you tell?

Kenny, Mark, LE...you all take such fabulous photographs. I'm thinking she might benefit from a class and a decent camera. There is a class at the jr college that might be a start, but I can't decide what to do about a camera. She's very responsible, but let's face it, she's still a kid. I don't want to set her up with something that's going to cause a life-altering tragedy if something happens to it.

I dunno. Ideas and thoughts? She uses my camera and takes better pictures with it than I do. Maybe that's what we ought to do for a couple more years. She can carry her purse camera with her for on the go opportunities and use mine when it's in a more controllable situation. Or maybe I'll give her mine and buy the Canon 5D with the loooong IS lens that I want for the next four years of indoor action shots (ballet and basketball). That's the camera this guy uses, he shot the photos of our girls at Festival last year. I watched him for a week. I think he's amazing.

Yes, I think so, Ax. Her facebook profile says "I love to dance and I can't pass up a good picture when I have my camera with me"

She looks at photos and wonders how they got a certain effect, so I think she might be interested in a 'how to' kind of class...there are a lot of hows she can't to with the camera she has, of course...so she'd probably need a bit better camera to get anything out of the class.

I'd recommend the cheapest Nikon SLR.

I think that would be a D40
I think the D50 is discontinued so you may still find a screaming deal on a new one.

SLRs are the only way to go.
Photography is all about the flexibility of the equipment making possible what you visualize.

She will begin to benefit from the SLR's flexibility immediately.
If she doesn't stick with it you'll have a superb family camera or something you can sell on eBay without too much loss.

I've always been a Nikonite but Canonites are tolerable too. :P
I am ignorant of their models.

Really, if you spend $300 on a nice non-SLR that money may be wasted when she outgrows it.

I love Ken Rockwell's reviews.

D40
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

snip

I own more expensive cameras, but whenever I grab a camera for my own personal vacations or family photos, it's almost always my remarkable Nikon D40. There isn't anything reasonable I can't do with Nikon's least expensive D40. There is no real reason to pay more for a D40x, D60, or D80. Save your money for more important things.

For $499, complete with an exceptionally good lens today, it's a no-brainer. (I paid $600 for my D40 a year ago.) I wouldn't bother with the more expensive Nikons unless you really want to spend money, or will be using it all day, every day.

thanks Kenny..."Canonites" sounds downright biblical

I might look around for that discontinued one and consider what to do.

Those really are great, Deb! Is she (or her feet) in any of those? Any timer shots?

The digital cameras provide the incredibly awesome advantage of allowing yourself to practice different angles, lighting, etc., without having to worry about paying for the pictures/film. I love my (film) camera, but. . . well, I am always hesitating practicing with the features b/c it will cost me.

The cheap camera she has may not produce the quality photographs she wants, but I bet she's getting great practice for when she eventually does have a good SLR!

No, those are other people's feet. She had an injury that took her out of action for a bit, so she took pictures instead of dancing. Oh wait...the one photo of the lone foot on the wood floor is her foot. I'm not real sure how she did that! It says in her facebook album that she decided to take that at 11.45 pm...she should have been in BED!!!!

Those are wonderful pictures, Deb.

Optimistic is so right, having a digital camera is so liberating in that you can take hundreds of shots, goof around, experiment, and not be thinking of the $$ involved in processing.
I think letting Merry play with the coolpix is great, regardless of what else you decide to buy. Let her click away and enjoy the thrill of capturing something that turns out to be beautiful. You are right, she won't learn the technical side of photography that way, but she will reinforce her natural ability to see beauty in everything. And she'll have fun.
I like Kenny's idea of the Nikon D40 too; just having a camera like that around, if she should choose to want to do more would be wonderful. And you could play with it too.

I've been thinking seriously about getting one myself. I love my coolpix, and always have it with me, but would really like to work with a SLR again. A digital one!

^_^ I love her 'midnight foot'

Okay, so Merry asked me to go for a walk this afternoon. She shot a few pics, not a bunch. I think her instincts about when to shoot color or black and white are neat. I cheat...I always shoot color and then make it black and white when I get the pics off the camera if I think it's neater. She decides before the shot. Anyway...here are some of Merry's pics from her cruddy little camera on our walk around town today. And Sue...you and Opti are so right. She entertained herself (AND ME) thoroughly this afternoon and it didn't cost us anything and the pictures are right there...immediate feedback and gratification.

I keep using the word "interesting" but that's what it is...interesting to me. I take a lot of photos. I was on that walk and I just plain did not see a lot of the things she saw until I saw her pictures.
