I have a Brother laser printer that I intend to replace. It would cost about $50 for a new toner cartridge and another $100 for the drum cartridge for the Brother. For that kind of money, why not get a new printer? Has anyone had any experience with Lexmark laser printers? B&W laser is what I'm looking for. |

My Lexmark experience has led me to the conclusion that I shall never buy another. Expensive cartridges, jammed all the time. Is now in it's happy resting place.

I for one have often bought used business laser printers, i.e., with decent duplex unit, 1000 page case, cartridge that lasts 50,000 pages etc. I think if you spend $200 on such a printer you'll end up with a much better thing than if you spend the same money for some low-quality consumer $hit. |

I bought a top line Brother all in one about a year ago, ink jet, scanner, fax, etc. It looked to be one of the most solidly built printers out there. Then it ran out of ink. So I learn that there were 4 separate ink cartridges, all together costing over 100 bucks. I bit the bullet and bought them, went home and put them in. I don't turn things off, so the printer had never been turned off the whole time I had it. I turned it off, replaced the ink cartridges, and it has never come on again. I called Brother, and was told......."Pffft"...... That one is sitting in a closet. I once bought a Lexmark printer/scanner ink jet. Flimsy piece of crap, worked good, ran out of ink faster than anything I've ever owned, and the ink cost more than the printer. That one is sitting in a closet. I recently bought a Samsung B&W laser printer. No scanner, no fax, just a printer. Well made, works like a champ, prints lots and lots and lots before it runs out of ink, and I paid 99 bucks for the first one. Then they ran a 40 dollar rebate on it at Staples and I bought 7 more, each ending up costing me about 50 bucks. That one is printing as I type. My thoughts on Lexmark is based just on my little bit of experience, observation of various models while shopping, and what I have been told by salesmen in stores who sell them..... Junk. |

Most of the laser printers do not have separate toner and drum cartridges. 50$ for the toner is a bit expensive. 100$ for the drum is cheap (I had a brother printer with separate toner and drums cartridges). You change the drum only after you replace the toner twice or three times. If the feeding mechanism (the rubber parts are not dry) works fine, keep the Brother. They don't make the new printers like they used to.... If you do buy another printer, ask if it can work with DOS - that means it will use its own internal processor for many tasks instead of choking your CPU . |

This is exactly the point. That's why the ink printers are so cheap. The profit comes from the ink. Some of HP ink printers are ridiculously cheap, but the ink.... |

If you can swing it, definitely go for the business grade stuff, man. For something economical, though, try this $169 item: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/product...04&sku=222-7676 (no duplex option, though... only available on higher cost models) I have been pretty happy with other Dell laser printer, so I feel pretty comfortable recommending Dell these days.

Thanks for your opinions, everyone. I have my eyes on this printer: the HP 2015d. Monochrome laser, duplexing, large input tray. If I use my discover money and buy it at Staples, it'll cost me about $80 after rebate. The negative reviews at Amazon deal with Vista incompatibilities (heh) and warrantee service. I've never had a problem with HP service. In fact, it's been outstanding. |

Here's a link to the Brother supplies page at Office Depot. As you can see, the toner is $62.99 and the drum cartridge is $104.00. The HP I'm looking at is $250 (it used to be $400) after rebate, and I have $175 I can spend at Staples in gift cards. Seems like a no-brainer, eh? |

My HP 930C ink printer is decomposing - plastic parts are falling from it. The ink is so expensive that I almost never use it. Very good to print music sheet in B/W. A friend of mine dumped a XEROX Phaser 3210. He thought that for the price of the toner he could buy a new printer. And so he did. Unfortunately the new printer could not work in DOS mode - he needed it to attach to some medical equipment. I took it, cleaned it, put new toner in it. It is exactly six years old and I have it for three years. Twice a year I have to take care of a rubber part in the feeding mechanism. Otherwise it is trouble free and working fine. Especially with a XEROX original toner cartridge. I think, though, that XEROX printers might be more expensive than HP. Besides, HP service here is terrible so I won't buy anything from HP. |

My office gave me a Dell laser printer for home. It manages to produce a fair number of pages before it uses a new toner cartridge. |

The HP 2015 is what we use in the office as personal printers. This model replaced the HP 1320 that we also have many of. It's a good printer George. It's why we have them. We have a couple of Brother 1440's and I hate them. They go bad and like you said, you have to replace the drum on about every 4th toner change. Stupid. |

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I just found out that HP is having another promotion at Staples. Bring in any HP printer, working or not, and you'll get $50 off. So, combined with all the other deals (rebates, Discover cashback coupons) I can get the 2015 for about $30! w00t!

So, I picked up the HP 2015 today. Nice printer. A bit loud, but many nice features such as automatic duplexing (so I can print all that piano music I download from PianoStreet) and it handles up to 12 envelopes via a different pathway). Costs: Printer: $500 Extra Toner Cartridge: $70 Total Cost: $570 Rebate: $150 Turn in old printer: $50 Discover Cashback bonus: $150 (six $25 gift cards) Rebate on cartridge: $40 Total savings: $390 Final cost for printer with TWO cartridges (each good for about 3000 pages) $190. Cost to upgrade Brother with new cartridge and drum cartridge $130. So, for $60 bucks extra, I got a new (better) printer and an extra toner cartridge. I think I did well. |
