1. small one-room white building in east calais VT called "the old west church" It's where my best friend was married and I played piano and was best man. 2. Yes. Again my best friend Rob is a catholic. i went to church with his family when I was a kid. I didn't eat the communion I didn't understand all of the symbolic stuff...bell ringing, repeated phrases, etc. At the end I remember everyone got up and turned to their neighbors and said "peace be with you" I thought that was pretty cool. 3. Yes, I call it feeling with my heart. When I can't figure something out I listen to my heart and tell others to do the same. That is how god communicates with me. I lost a dear friend and climbing partner when he died soloing Nez Perce in the Tetons. I followed his route the following day and I saw all kinds of animals, beautiful weather, picture-perfect conditions...it was like Doug's spirit was walking with me. 4. God where are you? 5. The safety and happiness of my family. Fair winds when I sail. |

1. What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word "church"? An image of a big cathedral style building. I really do love the archetecture of old churches, and enjoy seeing them. 2. Has anyone ever invited you to their church? What did you think when they asked you? Did you go? How did it feel? If you didn't go, why not? I've been to many church services for many denominations. I find it interesting to watch the varying customs of different denominations and religions. I had the pleasure of going to a gospel church when I was about 15 - a friend of mine sang in the choir. It was a really good time - everyone standing up and singing and lots of clapping and such. I found Catholic services to be the ones I had the most difficulty connecting with. With some other churches, I was able to take what was said and still connect the message to my own life, even though I have no belief (I can do that with the sermons you post here often, Dewey). I find that harder to do with a Catholic service, and so I had a harder time actually listening to what was being said because I didn't feel it applied to me. 3. Have you ever had a sense of God communicating with you? What was it like? Nope. 4. If you had one question you could ask God and knew you'd get an answer, what would it be? What were you thinking? Alright - to be a bit more serious, it'd be something along the lines of what Sue said. 5. Would you like prayer for anything occurring in your life? No, thank you. |

As a believer, I wasn't asked to respond. I thought I'd just mention that the only thing I don't like about church is the greeting part. I am just not a very outgoing, talkative guy. It was easier in my last church, where I knew everyone, but this church has over a thousand members so there is often someone I have never even seen, to shake hands with and talk to. Conversely, last Thursday I was walking thru the elementary school where my kids go. I was there for a charity dinner and silent auction. A nice older couple came up and stopped me to say hello. I didn't recognize them at all but they told me they appreciated my singing in the choir. Then on Sunday I worked in the nursery during the first service, like I do every other Sunday. My wife stayed home because she was ill. I sang in the choir at the beginning of the second service and then decided to duck out because I hate the greeting part (sounds funny, I know). I was going down the hallway and the same old couple came up to greet me. I got to meet Carlos and Vivian, recently moved up from Twin Oaks, CA. We talked for a few minutes and it was a real delight. Nice people. It didn't make me want to face greeting time along, though. I went to the store and looked for a grape tomato plant. |

Another comment... I am struck by how many of you have never been invited, and I find that appalling. It is obvious that y'all are not from the South...we are a tad more aggressive, shall we say...

1. What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word "church"? Rituals and tradition. 2. Has anyone ever invited you to their church? What did you think when they asked you? Did you go? How did it feel? If you didn't go, why not? Not since I was in high school. I am Episcopalian, but my maternal grandmother was a devout Methodist, and I would attend her church with her frequently up until about age 14. 3. Have you ever had a sense of God communicating with you? What was it like? No, but I made a "deal" with God once when I was in extreme panic over something, and felt I was answered. Because of that, I lived up to my end of the deal, which was a year of doing without something I felt I didn't deserve. 4. If you had one question you could ask God and knew you'd get an answer, what would it be? Why is there so much evil? 5. Would you like prayer for anything occurring in your life? Not at the moment. |

But I did one better and asked for the piece of info that would benefit me most!! |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

1) This: ![]() 2) Yes. I've always appreciated the gesture; it seemed like an effort to share something important with me. I've never felt any pressure, and I've always found it an interesting experience. My favorite experience was when I was invited to a Sikh temple, where the worship service consisted essentially of eating delicious Indian food non-stop. 3) Yes, twice. One was in a Buddhist temple. Both times, it was a feeling of complete peace and reverence for life. 4) Why does God allow children to perish at the hands of the wicked? 5) Prayers are always welcome, whether they help or not. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

1. What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word "church"? feeling rather than thought - solemn. 2. Has anyone ever invited you to their church? What did you think when they asked you? Did you go? How did it feel? If you didn't go, why not? Never asked. Forced, though, when I was in catholic school in NY. (Too young to think one way or another about; it was obligatory). 3. Have you ever had a sense of God communicating with you? What was it like? Sure! I'm a musician, after all. I would call it a kind of positive absence. 4. If you had one question you could ask God and knew you'd get an answer, what would it be? I'd prefer to ask myself. 5. Would you like prayer for anything occurring in your life? Sure! I think prayer has been something unfairly maligned. If I'm in a bad way, I'd happily and graciously accept your prayers. I'd feel even better about it if you didn't beseech God to come to my aid but rather skipped the intermediary and sent me your own positive feelings directly. |
