HOLY CARP!!!

Did anyone see Human Footprint on National Geographic about a week and a half ago? My kids and I watched it today (it's Earth Day, don't ya know). It tied in to our current units in both science and Geography, which is a bonus. Wow. We were ALL absolutely enthralled. The images of all the "stuff" we use over a lifetime were simply amazing. When they got to the part about pop cans/bottles, I was cowering behind my chair, and the kids were teasing me about how I make up for 3 non-pop drinkers. Then they proceeded to point out every Diet Coke can and say, "That's hers!" "Hey, there's another one!" "Why are there more Diet Coke cans than any other kind?" "Ms. Drum?" It's an hour and a half long (sans commercials) and we watched about 45 minutes of it. When I turned it off, the kids all groaned (and it was the end of the day!). I asked who would like to watch the rest tomorrow, and received thunderous applause. It's definitely cool to watch. Check it out, if you can. Anything that has 24 14 year olds AND their teacher captivated for 45 minutes is a must-see! |

For your information, Larry, we showed Human Footprint, which simply states how much "stuff" we use. That's it. It was interesting, the kids enjoyed it, and they learned something. I don't care if you believe that human caused climate change is true, untrue, or somewhere in between. The fact is, North Americans use a LOT of stuff - far more than we need to. That IS a fact. It doesn't hurt anyone to think about that, and cut back in the places they can. So get off my back. |

Speaking of school, I've taught my kids to cross their fingers and hum 'Oh, Canada' during the Pledge of Allegiance. Is that wrong? |

LMAO! I wouldn't have a problem with it. Then again, I don't make my kids sing Oh, Canada. They just have to stand quietly and respectfully if they choose not to sing. |

Watch it here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1207021100826614474 Funny, 50 years ago we were supposed to be proud of this kind of production, now we are supposed to be ashamed. I wonder what we'll think about it in another 50. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

That's actually not the same one we watched today. Though it looks very similar - just Brit, rather than US. |

 You should at least take notice of his methods, just not his conclusions. Some of his stuff is sound data. The rest is crap and I don't agree with his conclusions, but meh, least he's got people talkin' about it. |

![]() Aluminum cans are worth 40% of their volume in gasoline, in terms of the energy it took to produce them. ...not recycled that is. Recycle aluminum FTW. I'll look for the video! |

I planted a tree in 7th grade for Earth Day, that was fun. It's a good holiday...although I think they should make it Earth Month...for more of an impact.

They didn't have Earth Day when I was in 7th grade, but me, Charles, and R.H. sacrificed a huge snapping turtle to the pond god Ska...... |

I haven't seen that, but heard about it from several people. A great thing to show kids, and talk to them about. There was something similar doing the rounds on youtube recently; same message. We buy too much stuff. From what I've seen kids 'get' this, just like they have made recycling part of their lives. |
