20,000 have died on Mumbai's trains in five years April 18, 2008 MUMBAI, India - India's Central & Western Railway released data this week that show an average of 10 people die on its trains every day, CNN reported. Those deaths have totaled 20,000 over the past five years. Most deaths result from chronic overcrowding and aggressive passenger behavior. During morning and evening rush hours, some commuters ride the roofs of coaches despite the danger of electrocution from overhead catenary. Most deaths result from either electrocution or falling off trains. Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is one of India's largest cities, and trains are the most common form of travel. Some 7 million commuters ride the city's trains every day. C&W was forced to release the data this week after a Mumbai activist, Chetan Kothari, requested it under India's Right to Information Act. "There should be more awareness that it's just not worth the risk. Many people who die are the sole breadwinners of their family," Kothari said. Big Al |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

OK. Don't wear a helmet. But when you get all brain damaged and dependent in a wreck, we're just going to let you starve to death, or whatever. Why should I be taxed to pay for your choice to ride without a helmet? Your freedom ends at my wallet. |

Ask someone with a 4 year old child that has been thrown through the windshield and killed how they feel about seatbelt laws. Too extreme? OK, ask someone with a 35 year old spouse who has been thrown through the windshield and turned into a Terri Schiavo lookalike how they feel about seatbelt laws. People never think it's going to happen to them. This kind of stuff does affect our back yard. I have worked with safety issues for the last 20 years, and without legislation it's absolutely incredible the kind of stupid risks people are willing to ignore, overlook, or even worse take with the lives of others. |

Depends on how fast you drive. In present day US, lots of people drive very fast on very broad, well-paved roads, 55 mph, 65 mph, 70 mph ... seat belts and child car seats are crucial. Go to some less developed corners of the Earth, you'll be looking at narrow, bumpy roads, and people rarely go beyond, say 30 mph, 40 mph. Seat belts and child car seats are not critical then. There were certain times and places when/where seat belts and child car seats did not exist, yet people drove automobiles with low casualty rates. |
