Rant; Why do people need to know this stuff?

HOLY CARP!!!
Yesterday we were front page and today we're front page.

But! Today there are two articles. Today they had a photo of Denise's shallow grave on the front page. All it is is a picture of palmetto and scrub.

It's just awful. Should we stop our papers? I like reading the newspaper in the morning. We already cancelled the one subscription and are taking a different paper since this all happened. I hate to give up my morning paper. I don't know what to do.

And these two articles seem pointless to me. Do people really want to know this stuff or are they getting sick of it to?

What say you? You can see the picture to the left. Right there on the front page.

Seriously, do people want to know this stuff?

I think some people are interested, yes. Look at it from the newspaper's perspective, they need to find news stories and Denise's death was a significant and community-shocking event that people are probably still reading about.

Personally I would just try to ignore it as much as possible. If it offends you enough, then cancel your subscription. But also look at it from their point of view...I think they are just trying to tell as much of the (news) story as possible and aren't trying to offend. But if you do not want to be reminded of it each time you get the paper, then I would just stop picking it up.

Whatever makes you happy!

I Owe It All To John D'Oh
Read a non-local paper online for a while. It will all simmer down eventually.

I'm so sorry, Peggy.

Well, in my opinion, it's not so much that people "want to know" that kind of stuff. People complain all the time about what's on the news.

...but they still tune in or else they'd have nothing to complain about.

In other words, they pick stuff like this, not because people "want to know," but because they know people will read it if it's presented to them.

And you're right, it's a messed up way of going about things. :(
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Just look at how many CSI and Law and Order type programs are on television. There are true crime stories on cable. They are hugely popular.

I think some of the popularity comes from mystery - solving a crime - understanding the why and how something happened.

And some people like to be reminded of the fragility of life and happiness. There is a desire to live a bit in the shoes of another for a brief time.

Sadly, I suspect the last people being thought of are the people left behind - the impact that such stories have on them.

You may wish to just not open the paper - keep them in a stack to the side.

As I said earlier, Peggy, yeah...you may need to develop new habits for a while. Perhaps pick up something you've been meaning to read for years first thing in the morning. Or sit down at the piano and read music rather than news. For a while. Not forever.

People find crime, fictional or real, interesting. It's a vicarious experience that they like to experience, somewhat like watching horror movies. Truman Capote made a lot of money from "In Cold Blood" and discussion of the JFK assassination will probably pop up now and then as long as anyone remembers him. Both the mystery and the true-crime sections of the bookstores have lots of volumes for sale.

What hurts is when it's not some anonymous stranger that you're reading about, but someone near and dear to you. It just rips the scabs right off the wounds again.

I don't know how you can avoid this without avoiding the outside world at the same time. Maybe someone you know could censor your newspaper for you, but that might just leave you wondering what was blacked out or removed. Maybe ranting and raging at the world and the evil in it is the healthiest thing for you to do. If it feels like it is, then rant away. We're listening. Engaging in things you like to do, particularly vigorous activities or things like playing the piano that demand all your concentration, may offer some respite from other, grimmer thoughts.

I continue to pray that God will give you and yours solace and comfort in this ordeal sufficient to see you through each day.
