So, in the wake of my winning an award for excellent customer service thread, I bring you this thread. So an elderly man came in today and asked about the eggs we had on sale (2 dozen / $3). I told the man that we were out but expected more soon, and he went crazy. He was actually yelling, very loudly, when he found out. "I'm sorry, sir, we ran out this morning. We should be getting some more in within the next day or two" "WELL THEN WHY DID YOU GUYS ADVERTISE THEM IN TODAY'S PAPER! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HERE ON SALE!" "The sale runs all week. If you like I can...." "IF YOU WERE OUT, WHY DID YOU PUT IT HERE!?" (Waves ad around) "Sir, we didn't print that personally, it's a corporate ad...." 'WELL WHY THE HELL DO YOU EVEN BOTHER! YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE ANYTHING HERE! I'M GOING TO CALL THE 800 NUMBER!" He stormed off before I could even get another word in. Crazy! We had just run out this morning, too. We'd been running low and only get them delivered to us once a week. Guess you can't please everyone.... |

Exactly, man. What's wrong with the merchandiser? Pile up extra inventory before advertising a sale, man. ![]() (Congratulations on the award, jgoo. Now you can eye that merchandiser's job. If you're really, really into customer service, how about also keeping an eye out for any open position at Nordstrom's, assuming there's a Nordstrom store near you? )

There's a part of a plow called a "shear", apparently a removable/replaceable part that wears out with use. Old timers in the south call them "plow shares". Bear in mind this happened in Atlanta, where you don't run in to that many old timer southern farmer types.... Back in the mid 90s, an old timer farmer type guy came walking into my piano store in Atlanta, dried mud on his shoes, overalls, sweaty, etc. I walked over to assist him, spoke, and he said "You got any plow shares?" We're standing beside a 7' Bechstein at the time.... I said "Sir, this is a piano store. We have pianos, but we don't sell farm equipment." He looked around a bit confused, and then said "Are ye out of 'em, or did ye quit stocking them?" I said again, "Sir, we don't carry farming equipment. We sell pianos. Musical instruments. See? (pointing to a piano)... He said, "Well, damn.... I drove all the way into town and you're out. When ye gonna have some in stock?" I said...... "Sir, again, we don't carry plow shares. We don't sell anything at all like that. Why did you come here looking for plow parts, anyway?" He said....... "Ye don't know where I might find one, do ye?" Deciding he was most likely suffering from a bit of Alzheimer's, I did the only thing I could do under the circumstances.... I gave him directions to a competitor, and told him they were having a sale..... ![]() (ok, so the last line isn't true.... )

I have to be honest, Chris. I understand why you were a bit flabbergasted with this man. But one thing I've learned through our tragedy is not to judge. Who knows what's really going on in that man's life. It was wrong for him to take his anger and his issues out on you. But, I gotta tell ya, with what we've been going through, I get a lot more angry at things especially piddly petty things. It's so difficult sometimes for us to just get through a day, when something really really petty happens, I just snap. I handle the big traumatic things with grace but when it comes to other stuff, I don't know. He wasn't mad at you. He was just probably mad. I think what's going on with us, in our family and our tragedy isn't all that unique. I'm finding that there are a lot of people hurting out there. Anyhow, so I'm trying not to judge. Because I know now, that I just don't know what might be happening in people's lives that make them act this way. If you were to see me on the street, and you didn't know me, you'd probably thing I was the saddest person alive. And you'd wonder "what's she so sad about?" or "what's her problem?" I just can't smile. The only things I smile over, other than my own family, are babies. I believe it's because they are still so innocent and there's hope for them. Sorry but I just wanted to share that. I don't want to sound preachy. Like you I work retail so I know exactly what you were experiencing. Since we lost Denise I just think to myself either one or two things are going on. They either lost someone they love and they're angry over it and possibly afraid. Or they didn't take their meds. |

We do order extras on sale items, the problem is that they come in during the sale week instead of the week before. Sales run Sunday through Saturday, and our shipments (at least to my store) come in on Tuesday, with all the stock out on the shelves by Wednesday evening at the latest. So before then we have to survive off of what we have left over from the previous week. |

Peggy, that doesn't sound at all preachy. I actually hadn't given that thought a possibility. Perhaps there is something going on in his life and he was just using this as an outlet. However, that 'didn't take their meds' option could just as well be it, too.

He came back today. He said that he had called and talked to someone who confirmed that we got the eggs in today, and that he wanted some. I was at the front register and couldn't leave it, so I said in a polite tone: "I'm sorry, I can't get them for you, but the guy back in photo can grab them for you" Then the yelling ensued again. "THAT GUY'S GOT ABOUT SIX PEOPLE AROUND HIM ALREADY!" "I'm sorry, but I can't leave the register right now" I motioned at the people waiting in line. He walked back to photo, and by the time he got there the people (who were all together) were leaving the photo desk. He got his eggs and left, but not before informing us that he had indeed called the '800 number' on us for 'never having anything.' Yes, I'm definitely going with the 'didn't take his meds' option. |

Also, that whole thing about if a store advertises it, the store has to have it in stock is a generational thing. I remember people of my grandparents' generation making a big deal about that (not that I remember anyone screaming in a store of course). I just heard on NPR that the price of eggs, flower, and milk went up something like 30%, 20%, and 30% respectively this part year (although I'm sure I have the order wrong). They were interviewing a woman from a food bank who said their need is greater because more people need food. This is the kind of thing I was talking about when I said that inflation is not 4%. That's a joke. In fact, this was the lead story on NBC nightly news- record high food and gas prices. As far as the crazy man, I remember working at Wendy's and someone came in and lectured me about "this took sixteen minutes and fast food is supposed to be fast, that's why I come here" and you know- when you're doing your job as well as you can do it anyway, there's really not a lot you can do when someone treats you like that. If I'm being honest, I just kind of looked at her with an expression on my face like "duh". ![]() |

He might have run out of his meds, or he might have just been one of those people who aren't happy unless they've got something to complain about - so they'll fabricate a big deal out of something like that practically every day. Often, they're people who have worked in positions where they got dumped on continually, to the point where they have little or no self esteem, and in an attempt to build themselves up, they have to find someone "below" them to treat badly. Maybe it was just your store's turn. |

Oh for crying out loud. Eggs could be twice the price and they'd STILL be the biggest bargain in the store in terms of food value for the buck. Where else can you get a main course for 6 for $1.50? Eggs rock. |

Aaargh! 6:39 this morning and our daughter wants to get dressed: "If it's hanging in your closet you can wear it. If it's not, it's in the wash and you can't have it." The tantrum lasted about 20 mins. I went back to bed. John eventually solved the problem.
