My engagement ring isn't good enough

(Referring to jon's post) What does "high prole" mean?

Size of diamond - me thinks only women with big, fat fingers should wear big diamonds on fingers, else big diamonds overwhelm small fingers, won't look good.

Also, it should be obvious to the casual observer that people who want bigger pianos are better than people who want bigger cars who in turn are better than people who want bigger diamonds.
Desire for bigger piano = cultured, refined
Desire for bigger diamond = materialistic, shallow

The banner ad I see on both pages of this thread is from DeBeers.
Coincidence? I don't think so.

SO, she writes a post saying "would I be a horrible, nasty, greedy, selfish, lower than dirt person" if she asks her finance to buy her a bigger ring!

Wearing a ring that size would mark her as high prole.

Um, what is "high prole"?

Ax, Daniel - its a reference to a particular social class per Paul Fussell's analysis.

So what you're saying is that by trying to make a certain impression with her large diamond she's making the opposite one. Correct me if I'm wrong. I just thought she was a clueless snot.

Yes, but as Kenny points out its all relative to the observer. No doubt her high-prole friends would find the big diamond appealing.

I saw a study that said the average size of an engagement ring in the US is .37. I see women wearing diamonds that are so small that you can't really tell they are faceted rather than a chip in a lump of gold. The bank teller was wearing a ring like that the other day. I complimented her on it and told her how nice it looked. She told me that she got it recently because when they got married they couldn't afford it and then she kind of held her hand out and looked at it admiringly. I'm all for people feeling good about themselves. This man is not going to feel good when this woman "returns" her engagement ring. I flat out told her that it would be a very rude thing to do and that she should enjoy her ring. No doubt she only posted to be reassured that she really isn't such a bad person for doing this and is going to do it anyway. As far the size of diamonds goes, personally I like .6 ct round diamonds, but certainly that isn't to impress anyone. As far as wearing one, I don't want to wear a diamond ring or an earring, so I'm out of luck. :P

I know diamonds cost a lot of money, but to me their value is near zero.

I'd prefer a simple unadorned metal ring over some preposterous diamond thing any day.

With engagement rings, I'd say that all that matters is that it is an engagement ring; even if it were made from plastic it would not matter.

Mrs. Dewey's engagement ring is much like that. I've offered to buy her a bigger stone and she refuses, saying it wouldn't be the same to her.

Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome.

The only cure is a larger diamond, which also promptly begins to shrink.

oh brother...

I certainly hope no one's well being is dependent upon this person. She'll be so knotted up over what people think of her ring that she'll forget to feed the hungry or stop the bleeding. What is it with people who require a state of emotional upheaval to feel alive? Blah.

Ouch. That's a very expensive setting too. It appears to be a Vatche X prong. Even in white gold it's $800 or $900. And it's gorgeous. And so is the stone.

I like the person who said, "Could it be that this person is just jealous?" Well, duh!

I'll never own a diamond that big. That's another person who needs to get a grip! :comphit:

I really think some of these have to be sockies of diamond sellers.

Funny story. I never saw a piece of Bulgari jewelry and I just found a picture of a Bulgari ring. Here is the picture I found.

Posted Image

When I was working for my uncle's driving service, a long time ago, I drove Mr. "Nick" Bulgari's car from Millbrook to NYC. As it happens, it was a Buick Riviera. Maybe that means more to an Italian than it does to me. So anyway, I get into the city (Manhattan) and I'm trying to park the car. This man comes rushing up the car SCREAMING at me. Idiot. All he had to do was speak to me like a rational human being. I speak English. I had one of the tires on the curb. Yes, that was a mistake, but it's not always easy to drive a car you're not familiar with to a place you've never been, with or without someone you've never met. Later I drove a woman who told me that Nick Bulgari bad mouthed America and Americans every chance he got, which she found ironic (and so do I) considering the amount of money his company makes off of Americans. He also sleeps around. That was the point of her story, that he hit on her, yada, yada.

I always wondered what his jewelery looked like. I think it's hideous.

Yes, I noticed that, but when I looked at that thread again, I realized that a lot of people did tell her to keep the ring. I mean honestly, my grandmother wanted "a one carat diamond" her whole life and finally got one that happened to be .98 when she was about 50 years old. Some people on that forum really need to get some perspective.
