It's been kind of crazy here, too.

In order to facilitate access to events, DC Transit is going to issue Mass Passes (their term, not mine!); an all-day metro ticket for nine bucks.

I don't know if this was just coincidence but even today, the metro was insanely packed this morning. I can't wait to see what tomorrow will be like.

Also, somewhere downtown I saw that somebody posted fliers on every lightpost on that block saying "Pope Go Home!" My roomate thought it was the work of Protestants but I told him this isn't Ireland; I chalked it up to militant atheists.

My dad's goin' to the Mass tomorrow, and my uncle told me he's been invited to the White House ceremony. (He played it down of course; I called him up to see what everyone's plans were this week, and he said (irritated) "mostly free, except I have to attend this 'White House' thing tomorrow." Then he started laughing.

I'll post pictures if I get any!

I'd go and I'm not even Catholic. I like Benny. I think he's cool.

I just dawned on me I am old enough to think the Pope is cool.

Dang.

He turned out to be! He's been full of surprises so far. Not the ol' stick in the mud everyone thought he was.

It's not exciting if you have to travel downtown DC! In this area, you get used to severe traffic tie-ups. Motorcades, parades, protests, etc... I've never seen anything like this, however.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Do they get them specially made for every country he visits? Or do they ship just one around everywhere? And what happens to the old ones? Can't imagine a much of a resale value on these puppies. :P

I have fantasized MANY times about owning an old model Pope Mobile(tm). Man, I'd have a ton of fun with one of those things.

Sitting in the back seat during a Figure-8 race, going through car washes, donuts in iced-over parking lots, rally races... the list goes on!

I heard on CNN yesterday that they ship 'em.

Would be a sweet ride, if you could get one used at a good price.

Be awesome for drive-ins. But the car wash would be the coolest, for sure!

For drive-ins, I would have one of those vacuum tubes installed that you see at the bank. And of course, I would also have speakers and a mic installed to talk to the carry-out guy.

Awesome!

Man, I want a quarter million dollars sooo bad.

I mean we all know how fun it would be, but think of the practicality! You can always use HOV lanes because in the PopeMobile(tm), you'll always have a co-pilot!

Yes, and the pope has not even driven that Golf.

Now imagine how much you'd get for such a fancy car which the car has actually used!

Before he became pope, he was known as "God's Rottweiler" in Germany.

I met him in 1986, and found him to be a very humble, pastoral and non confrontational man. The liberal press had smeared him God's Rottweiler and Der Panzerkardinal without ever understanding the man.

BTW, Klaus I have one of those Wir Sind Papst badges and a bottle of Weideneder Papst-bier!
The dogma lives loudly within me.

I think the "God's Rottweiler" and "Panzerkardinal" phrases were not necessarily meant in a negative way. He was not afraid of having confrontational and unpopular opinions on many issues, and this can be both good and bad.

The "Wir sind Papst" thing, as you maybe know, was originally a (by now famous) headline of Germany's biggest tabloid paper, "Bild". Unfortunately I didn't buy a copy of it that day.

So the update is, The Pope's Appearance was quite a thing to behold.

My parents went to the Mass, but my aunt, uncle, and cousin all went as well. I believe I was the only schmuck working that day. :P

All around town that day, there were salesman trying to cash in on the visit. Pope t-shirts, Pope trinkets, coins and flags, and Pope coffee mugs. These weren't unlicensed street vendors (well, not all of them), Catholic organizations were also pawning off this stuff.

I mean, the whole thing has turned into a weird kind of religious spectacle. Tickets to the Mass were sent out to local parishes because, oh I don't know, it's supposed to be a Mass. Not a Rolling Stones concert. But apparently people were selling tickets on eBay just the same.

ANYways, my family took some pretty good pictures from what I hear, so as soon as I get them to send me some I'll post 'em here.
