I was watching a video on youtube today and noted how similar the harmonic progressions (basically I IV V with some extras were to a Bach Prelude I'm working on on the organ. In the bridge, a gospel singer belts out a refrain of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" -- layered on top of the same homophonic accompaniment at roughly 4:05 -- which I thought was clever. I've heard that Pet Shop Boys use a Mac Laptop for everything. Any idea what kind of percussion program could generate the lightning bolts and techie rhythm sounds? It can all be sync'd to another instrument right? Like via a beat clock or something? I've been thinking of doing something with a classical piece and then laying down a succession of music that's been written using the same chords -- like from Pachelbel to Coolio or something like that. Here's the Pet Shop Boys video -- a great salve for Catholic guilt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7kBIbkLPk0 |

I've done some googling and came up with Doug DeAngelis and Roland's Cakewalk software suite as starting points. The internet is so amazing. All this new knowledge and I am only on my second cup of coffee. |

Heh... There's a way to synch up all the MIDI stuff, but I don't know how to do it. I'm running a PC with Cakewalk Sonar as my multitrack recording program. I've got my Alesis QS-8 synth and everything running to/through an Eideros MIDI interface, because I need the phantom power for my condenser mic. I can plug in guitars to it and record as audio, download MIDI drum patterns... I've never had the chance to use a MAC, so I don't know... I think there's a program called, "Garage Band," that might do what you're wanting to do. Good luck! |

Garage Band is too simplified. It's all loops. You can't really modify anything. It's a great starter program, but it's more like a video game than a tool. I've done some pretty extensive research on Cakewalk, and see that it is probably worth more research. I'll have to check out your stuff again. Thanks! |

I really like Cakewalk, and with a bit of tweaking, you can really kick out some professional results. The folks here should be able to help you out a lot. There's a HUGE amount of information, and there's a place to submit your songs and get feedback on your mixing techniques and stuff.... Good luck. This stuff is five miles deep... Keep in mind that people go to college and get degrees in this stuff! But it's not out of reach for the home recording amateur.

Axtremus has posted a few of his recordings, too. His setup is pretty simple: A couple of condenser mics into an amplifier, into his computer. If you're wanting to slice and dice beats and stuff though, you're going to be working with MIDI, which, once you get the hang of it, is more versatile and easy to work with than is, straight audio. |
