This place is still way better than the only other forum I frequent, which is a forum for alumni from my old boarding school in Scotland. All the recent discsussions there have been about getting the UK out of the EU, The Treaty of Lisbon, Gordon Brown is an idiot for not putting the question of getting the UK out of the EU to the voters, and how the (new) Labour knows nothing about democracy. Mind you, not one mention of Bush causing these issues - which, come to think of it, is quite refreshing. |

I doubt it. Current discussion relates to Enoch Powell and his "Rivers of Blood" speech. Actually an interesting read concerning black immigrants into the UK in the late 60's. Enoch Powell - Rivers of Blood speech I am also picking up new words in the English dictionary - "Eurinal" being one of them. |

Of course he was right, and Hastilow was too.

Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow. - Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

OK - I had to go look up Hastilow. He's more current. What's interesting is that similar things are stated in the US about immigration. To quote Hastilow: It’s claimed we couldn’t survive without immigrants to work in our hotels, pubs and restaurants, to pick our fruit and clean our hospitals. But that’s because we make life too easy for the five million or more people who could be working but enjoy life too much living off the state. Why are 1.65 million people unemployed when it seems as if there’s a job for more or less anyone who wants one? Why are 2.4 million people claiming incapacity benefit when society is getting healthier? In the past they would have been accused of “swinging the lead”, “skiving”, “scrounging” or “cheating”. Now we’re told they need “up-skilling” and then they would be only too happy to work (but for their bad backs). We only need so many Polish waitresses because so many people who were born and bred in Britain can’t be bothered to work. This week we have seen a slight but important shift. Immigration has come out of the closet. Sounds just like comments made about the illegals from Mexico. I know too many Scots, so when Hastilow wrote in his blog in 2007 that Scottish people were "exploiting" England "in much the same way that colonial powers in the 18th century used to exploit the natives of South America" - that must have caused some backlash from Scotland? The Scots, of course, have always considered that they and their country have always been exploited for English agendas. |

"Any man who would make an X rated movie should be forced to take his daughter to see it". - John Wayne There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it". Henry II: I marvel at you after all these years. Still like a democratic drawbridge: going down for everybody. Eleanor: At my age there's not much traffic anymore. From The Lion in Winter.

I always thought Enoch Powell was a total knobhead. Rivers of blood indeed. How ironic that he went over to become an MP in Northern Ireland representing a group of descendants of Scottish immigrants who had indeed caused huge amounts of bloodshed due to religious bigotry. |
