Nasal sprays

My nose was stuffy, as the weather has been funny here, so I bought one of those nasal decongestant sprays. It works pretty good - I hate having a stuffy nose.

Is there anything else that helps stuffy noses? I don't like the spray too much. I noticed that depending on how the heater is turned on, it affects one's nose too.

HOLY CARP!!!
That Aftin stuff is a bit scary - anything that cleans a person out like that must have some serious sh!t in it.

Can you go for a run in the cold? That seems to make my nose run like crazy.

Be careful.

Be very very careful.

Nasal decongestants work by constricting the blood vessels - less blood flow, less mucus production. The problem is that if you use too much, you can cause so much constriction of the blood vessels that you'll end up with a Nasal Septal Perforation.

You see this a lot in coke-heads, though people who use a lot of nasal decongestants can get it as well.

This is something you don't want.

Ever.

If you have a runny nose that persists - see a doctor.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

It just pops up occasionally, like one or two days in the year when it gets cold - I rarely get colds, but I do get them mildly occasionally.

It is irritating having a stuffy nose. Is there a natural way to remedy it? Like perhaps walking around, or drinking certain liquids, or something along those lines?

I know there are some nose massages you can use, that help a bit.

Place an onion (cut into large pieces) on your nightstand overnight. Your nose will be much better in the morning.

Cocaine.

Probably doesn't last as long as Afrin, but it's much quicker.

Y'all don't have a bottle of cocaine drops rattling around the ED or the OR?

Of course we do. 4% cocaine is readily available. The ENT's swear by it. For a long time I used to use a mixture of 4% lidocaine with 10% neosynephrine because signing out the coke was such a PITA. It never worked as well as the coke. I've gone back to using the cocaine.

(don't you *dare* take that last sentence out of context!)

Buy a hot steam vapourizer and a jar of Vicks. Follow the instructions.

Or...

Go to the health store and buy bag of eucalyptus leaves. Fill a 2 litre or more kitchen pot of water and bring to boil. Take off stove and throw a handful or two of eucalyptus leaves into the hot water. Place on table or counter, cover your head with a towel and breathe in the vapours for 10 minutes. Repeat as necessary.

Those sinus cleanser pots (like sinucleanse) work really well for clearing up the nose and solving post nasal drip sore throats. I cut the saline dosage in half since it seems too strong. I've sometimes added a bit (1/4) of hydrogen peroxide, but that can be irritating if your nose is sensitive -- however, it seems to kick butt on the germs.

I've heard the mucus membranes need to be moist to work as part of the immune system, and that people get sicker in the winter since they dry out. Is that so?

It's all about ciliary motility. Keep the nose hairs moist, and they'll keep the sinuses and nasal passages clean. Low humidity is bad for motility.
