James Galway and the Virginia Symphony give three performances of John Corigliano's Pied Piper Suite this weekend. The first is tonight at the Ferguson Center in Newport News. Tomorrow they play at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk and the final performance is at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach on Sunday. The piece requires a flute choir made up of kids. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings they rehearsed with the Master himself. I went to last night's rehearsal. What a treat to hear these kids working with consummate professionals. I think they all realized the golden gift they had received, though for the younger ones the real understanding may only come years later. Here's a photo I took before the rehearsal. My youngest is the long haired one behind and to the left of Galway. [Edit: the one in orange .... the boy, not the girl in blue ....]

Um, I guess I wasn't very specific, was I. I meant the long haired one in the ORANGE shirt who is behind and to the left of Galway. HE would not appreciate being referred to as my daughter. Yes, I do think he enjoyed the evening. And I think he understands how amazing this opportunity is. He's not particularly demonstrative, though that certainly doesn't distinguish him among twelve year old boys. One interesting side note. At the photo op I heard Galway playing a little of Handel's overture to the 'Queen of Sheba.' It turns out my son had asked him to play it. He has been working it up for a competition that takes place tomorrow. He has got a busy Saturday coming up. |

It really does sound like something special, PD. I think the opportunity to work with professionals can be very inspiring for children. I'm glad your son liked it. I'm getting better acquainted with Corigliano's compositions this year because he's the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's composer of the year. Big Al |
