HOLY CARP!!!
|
It's been a ROUGH week at school. I won't go into all of the reasons, but it's been tough. I've been sleeping horribly, and my students are definitely feeling the pressure. Add to that an icky incident today. Plus Liam got headlice (he has two kids who are chronic in his class, and he pals around with both of them. Sigh.) so that had to be dealt with (ick!). Then my power steering lines on my car went. Ugh. Tonight, I walked out of the building with nothing. No marking. No prep work. I just left (at 5:45 ) I'm sure I'll do some prep over the weekend, but I just couldn't handle taking anything home.Next week will be better. Right?

Dol, As you probably recall, I was a teacher for ten years or so... There are two really hard things to deal with: 1. Boundaries. I had a really hard time with this because i cared so much about so many of my kids. And I was in a boarding school so the issues were many and deep. You are better equipped to help them when you literally do NOT "feel their pain" but maintain enough distance to be objective and helpful. I learned this lesson after about ten years of teaching and a week or so before I quit teaching. Not easy, but important. 2. Teachers are underpaid. There is never enough money. Interesting that Obama has said this to curry favor with the NEA, but then turned around honestly and said that pay increases should be tagged to merit, an anathema to the union. You are clearly a smart and hard working teacher. Why should the deadwood who has been there for 20 years more than you and does a tenth of the good be paid so much more than you? I was an achiever and I swea this is what drove me out of teaching. Didn't matter how hard i worked or how well my kids did...there was no way to get ahead. jf |

My issue with this, Jack, is who decides who the good teachers are? The ones who deserve to be paid more? The evaluation system is often hugely political, and the judgments reached generally are uncorrelated with the quality of the teaching. |

Sometimes things just seems to pile on. Bad luck comes in threes? Just keep telling yourself that it will pass. It will. I can't speak to the teaching woes, but I can to being a single parent with car problems and head lice problems - two things the thought of which give me virtual PTSD symptoms. My poor assistant just went through head lice - one brought them home, but she has two younger ones who also had to be treated. She had two bouts before she was out of the woods. She was so worried about picking them up herself (which happened tome during one of the bouts with my boys) that I did a head search on her at the office - talk about cozy employer relations. You have to virtually decontaminate the entire house - all the bedding, stuffies, outer wear - blech! And then if you don't get every single nit out of the hair, the n@sty little things will reappear, not to to mention that the same will happen if the parents of the kid who brought it to school in the first place don't take adequate measures to delouse. Hopefully your school has stringent measures about not allowing kids back to school until their heads have been thoroughly checked by a nurse. The word nitpicking gained its true meaning for me after these ordeals. It makes buzz cuts seem very appealing! |

Thanks, guys. I got off easy with the headlice thing. I was gone for 8 days over Christmas, and Liam wasn't here for 10. He was treated before he came to my place, so while I changed bedding and all that jazz, I didn't have to worry about them being in the house, since the critters had no food source here for over a week and would all be dead. I'm good friends with the EA who does the school checks, so I had her check my head (I'm clean, thank goodness) and I take Liam to her every other day for a check. We also buzzed off Liam's hair. I want the things GONE! All the teachers who work at our school and have kids who go there have gone through this. We have strict policies about kids returning to school after they've been found, but we also have a lot of very large families, and so they often have trouble getting them completely out of the house.Good things - we're pushing our kids REALLY hard right now because of some intiatives we have to implement because we're an OFIP school (basically, we have low test scores, so the Ministry camps out in our building offering professional development and money for release and resources - it's a good thing, but stressful). But my kids are doing AWESOME work - and they see that they're doing great work, so that's nice. Also, my car only cost $200 to fix. Combination of a really good but reasonably priced mechanic, and that they managed to replace the parts without removing something or another - cutting labour time from 4.5 hours to 2. So it could have been worse! |

Yes, I have one black cashere sweater that I bought on sale last year, and I wear it too often. I was about ready to retire it, but after using the stone, I think I can wear it another 100 days in a row. Thanks for the tip -- I always thought there should be a solution to that problem. |
