Cool indeed. I saw Chuck Yeager fly into Oshkosh about 8 years ago, in a P51, of course.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Thanks OT - that was great!

What are your first and second favorite planes?

For WWII my favorites are in order: P-38 Lightning, P-51 Mustang and the Black Widow fighterbomber (I think that's what it's called).

If I included Axis fighters on the list I would replace the Black Widow with the ME109.

If it was planes of all time, it would be the Lightning, the A-10 Warthog and the F-16 Falcon.

I love WWI planes, too! :)

First favorite: F4U Corsair

Second: B-17

Honorable Mention: P-38(what's not to love?)

The Black widow was the P-61:

I understand the P-61 wasn't a great success (but maybe fit in well eventually as a night fighter) but I always loved it's looks and the idea behind it.

Methinks that one is a model.

I was under the impression its primary function was as a night fighter. However, it also looks like it grew out of "Pappy" Gunn's concept of the "commerce destroyer".

I think might have been more of the case that it showed up so late in the war it had little to do, and therefore little impact, and by the time Korea came around it was perhaps obsolescent.

Yeah, probably a flying model. The cockpit looks a bit spartan, doesn't it?
