Mr. Romney put forth a hard-line stance on the issue, arguing that the illegal immigrants in the country should be given some time to arrange their affairs but that all should be required to go home and “get in line with everybody else.”

I agree with Romney on this one. Too bad more of the current crop of candidates don't support this view.

I agree in principle - but exactly how do you go about that? What will you do to make them go home? The only way to do that is make it impossible to work illegally.

I also agree in principle, but do not think it is entirely plausible.

Secure the border, improve immigration policies, and enforce TOUGH fines and punishments to anyone employing an illegal immigrant. But for those that will stay "in hiding" we cannot deport all of them and should have a McCain-esque plan to let them work toward freedom with fines, a clean criminal record, english-literacy requirements, etc.

If you do that, you give an advantage to people who broke the law to come here, as compared to those who stayed at home and waited for a legal opportunity.

That's not right.

I'll sum it up this way: If there was a way to deport every illegal, I would support it.

Hopefully national ID and strict enforcement - both of which will cost ungodly amounts of money, especially the enforcement - will eventually reduce the actual illegal problem to a manageable level. Perhaps at that point we can start deporting.

But whatever it is it is going to take a long, long time. Far longer than is desirable for securing the border.

In Tennessee, they've just recently passed new legislation that allows for harsher penalties for people who knowingly employ illegals. I think the rule on it, is "two strikes and you're out." This seems like a strong, yet reasonable step in the right direction, to me.
